En Güines, Mayabeque, agentes de la PNR (Policía Nacional Revolucionaria de Cuba) acosaron a un joven vendedor ambulante que estaba vendiendo viandas (tubérculos básicos como yuca, malanga y plátanos) en el Parque Martí. Incluso patearon a un perrito pequeño. Agarraron al vendedor, lo tiraron al suelo y lo detuvieron, aunque no estaba robando ni amenazando a nadie, solo tratando de sobrevivir. Él repetía una y otra vez que no había hecho nada malo y estaba preocupado por el proyecto escolar de su hijo. Personas grabaron mientras era retenido sin ofrecer resistencia, y ahora enfrenta cargos como “desacato”, un delito vago que significa “desobediencia a la autoridad” y que se usa para castigar a civiles. Así opera el régimen comunista de los Castro: convertir la supervivencia en delito mientras protege su propia corrupción. In Güines, Mayabeque, agents of the PNR (Cuba’s National Revolutionary Police) harrassed a young street vendor who was selling viandas (basic root vegetables like cassava, malanga, and plantains) at Parque Martí. They even kicked a small dog. They grabbed the vendor, forced him down, and took him into custody even though he wasn’t stealing or threatening anyone, just trying to survive. He kept repeating he did not do anything wrong and was worried about his son’s school project. People recorded as he was restrained without resistance, and he now faces charges like “desacato” (a vague charge meaning “contempt of authority,” often used to punish civilians), this is how the Castro communist regime operates, turning survival into a crime while protecting its own corruption. This video may be from last year but there has been no justice, no accountability, only impunity under the Castro tyranny. Mientras la mayoría del pueblo estaba en completa oscuridad por otro apagón impuesto por la tiranía comunista cubana, la estación de policía y la sede del Partido Comunista sí tenían electricidad. El pueblo no. Por octava noche consecutiva los cubanos salieron a las calles a tocar cazuelas. Caminaron por el pueblo y recorrieron las calles en bicicletas en medio de la oscuridad gritando “Libertad”. La multitud se reunió frente a la estación de policía y luego avanzó hacia la sede del Partido Comunista, el símbolo del sistema que ha controlado sus vidas por más de seis décadas. Lo que ocurrió después casi no se ha visto en Cuba. Los manifestantes entraron en el edificio y quemaron muebles dentro mientras años de rabia, hambre, represión y humillación explotaban al mismo tiempo. Testigos y periodistas reportan que un menor de 16 años resultó herido por un disparo de las fuerzas represivas durante los hechos. Poco después de que los videos comenzaran a circular, el acceso a internet en la zona fue cortado, dejando la situación dentro de Morón prácticamente en la oscuridad y aumentando el temor a represalias. While most of the town sat in darkness under another blackout imposed by the Cuban communist tyranny, the police station and the Communist Party headquarters still had electricity. The people did not. For the eighth consecutive night Cubans came out into the streets banging pots in protest. They walked through the town and rode bicycles in the dark chanting “Libertad.” The crowd gathered outside the police station and then moved toward the headquarters of the Communist Party, the symbol of the system that has controlled their lives for decades. What happened next was something rarely seen in Cuba. People stormed the building and burned furniture inside as years of anger, hunger, repression, and humiliation erupted at once. Witnesses and journalists report that a 16-year-old was injured by gunfire from repressive forces during the unrest. Shortly after videos of the events began spreading, internet access in the area was reportedly cut, leaving the situation inside Morón largely in the dark and raising fears of retaliation. Cubans know the danger of confronting the dictatorship. They know the price. No, it’s the regime that hoards food, medicine and resources while the people starve. Cuba trades with 190+ countries. The embargo doesn’t block food or medicine. There is so much going on here at home and so much I can say about the heartbreaking things the immigrant community is experiencing here in the US. I also feel a personal responsibility to speak about what’s happening in Cuba, I still have family on the island that we speak to and send medicine, food and clothes to. It has been 67 years of a failing dictatorship and an oppressive regime. The Cuban people are suffering in an echo chamber where no one can hear them because to speak is to risk your life. Many people are starving, looking for food in trash heaps, and the only way to survive is having relatives ship you boxes of medicine because not even the hospitals have medicine. The power is gone for so long that food spoils and water becomes scarce . When people have peacefully protested, they have disappeared or been put behind bars, some as young as 13 years old. This is a reality where a post online costs you your life. The Cuban people have lived without dignity and without hope for too long. It’s no wonder so many Cubans have thrown themselves into shark infested waters, making boats out of tires and sticks and risking their lives for freedom. 🧵1/ Cuba’s hunger crisis started in 1959 when the Castro communist regime seized farms through Agrarian Reform. Land was confiscated, private agriculture dismantled, and food production centralized. Farmers no longer decided what to grow or sell. The regime did. When power controls food, food becomes control.
