Earlier this month, with @fgvdireitosp and the support of ACT Promoção da Saúde, the Global Center for Legal Innovation on Food Environments hosted the event, "New frontiers in corporate civil liability for complex harms," in Brazil. The keynote speakers, Jordi Ferrer Beltrán and Vitor de Paula, presented their legal opinion on proof of causation at the population level and the role of epidemiological evidence in establishing causation. Other panelists also emphasized reframing civil liability for complex damages to address the collective and diffuse harms caused by tobacco products, as well as the challenges of ensuring corporate accountability and effective reparations for harms to Brazil’s public health system.
