Regrettably, he is in denial. There are 12.4 million unemployed people, and of these, around about 10 million, nearly 80% are trapped in structural, long-term unemployment, meaning they have been without work for over a year. The majority are young people, women, Black South Africans, and those in rural areas.
Even if we were to absorb all of them into universities and TVET colleges, it would not resolve the crisis because the economy is simply not creating jobs. The latest data I saw shows that over 600,000 graduates including doctors, lawyers and engineers are unemployed
Yes, education is essential. Stats SA confirms that those without a matric qualification face almost no chance of employment. But we must not exaggerate the role of education to justify maintaining economic policies that have clearly failed the unemployed. The crisis is not just a skills problem, it is a failure of the economy to generate decent work.
