I’ll leave you with these two headlines. Raheem Sterling, Marcus Rashford, Bukayo Saka, etc and now recently MLS, all on the receiving end of ‘you know what’. It happens time and time again, countless examples.

Let’s just charge Arsenal for the vast majority of the football world reacting in the same way to a red card. Let’s put that on the club, its fans and its manager. What we won’t do is look at our own referee organisational culture and external perception Let’s triple down

I can’t fucking believe this @andydunnmirror just called 18 year old Myles Lewis-Skelly a villain and called the independence of the independent panel that reviewed Oliver’s error into question I really hope Myles sues him. He has cause. No idea how he got that past the lawyers

Michael Oliver’s controversial red card decision in the Arsenal vs. Wolves match should spark an important discussion about refereeing standards and how PGMOL manages its officials. This incident highlights systemic problems in decision-making, communication, and accountability—issues rooted in the rigid hierarchy within officiating teams. PGMOL’s approach to referees mirrors challenges faced by South Korean aviation before Crew Resource Management (CRM) was introduced. In aviation, strict hierarchies prevented junior co-pilots from challenging senior captains, even in critical situations. Similarly, in football officiating, a rigid hierarchy creates two key problems: Senior referee on the pitch: VAR officials often hesitate to challenge the authority of a senior referee, fearing their input will be dismissed or lead to conflict. Senior referee in VAR: A senior official in the VAR room can dominate the decision-making process, overruling the less experienced head referee without meaningful collaboration. Both scenarios lead to poor decisions because hierarchy, rather than teamwork, drives the process. PGMOL’s habit of publicly defending referees, even in cases of clear mistakes, reinforces this culture and erodes trust in the officiating system. How PGMOL’s Actions Worsen the Problem: Defensiveness Over Mistakes: By rarely admitting errors, PGMOL discourages referees and VAR officials from owning mistakes and learning from them. Reinforcing Hierarchy: PGMOL’s frequent defense of senior referees reinforces power imbalances. Lack of Accountability: Without visible consequences for repeated mistakes, trust in officiating erodes, and the system appears more concerned with protecting reputations than ensuring fairness. Lessons from CRM for PGMOL: Flatten the Hierarchy: Treat all officials—whether on the pitch or in VAR—as equal contributors to decisions. Acknowledge Mistakes: Publicly admitting errors builds trust, encourages learning, and prioritizes improvement over defensiveness. Train for Psychological Safety: Provide training to help referees communicate openly, recognize unconscious biases, and collaborate effectively across roles. Ensure Accountability: Implement clear and visible consequences for repeated errors to rebuild public confidence in officiating. Just as CRM transformed aviation safety by addressing rigid hierarchies and poor communication, PGMOL must adopt similar principles to improve refereeing standards. The perception of untouchable authority among senior referees must be dismantled to create an environment where all officials feel empowered to prioritize the integrity of the game. The Arsenal vs. Wolves match should not be seen as an isolated incident but as the starting point for much-needed reform.

The David Coote PR train is so obviously just a checklist to get him back in the industry. Guy’s doing apologies in an interview with The Sun? He is not sorry at all.

So Michael Oliver received a car bomb threat (which is unacceptable) after awarding a penalty in the Liverpool vs Man United game. No media coverage, no PGMOL statement. He apparently receives similar threats this time around and there is a statement and full media coverage. Why?

Oliver received death threats 3 weeks ago. PGMOL were not appalled by those ones, apparently. Those death threats were OK. Only the ones after Oliver and PGMOL were called out by the entire football industry for what is very clear anti-Arsenal bias (clear to even Jamie O’Hara).
