Jackie Young has quietly turned into one of the WNBA’s most dangerous and clutch guards. She doesn’t always grab the headlines, but when the moment is biggest, she shows up. And the Aces are better for it. Young has a way of swinging momentum with a single play, hitting shots, making passes, or taking over stretches of the game that can change a series in an instant. Rewinding to the 2023 Finals, if you weren’t paying attention—or if it’s been a minute—Young’s Game 1 third-quarter performance completely shifted the series trajectory. Trailing the New York Liberty 49-46 at halftime, the Aces outscored New York 26-16 in the third quarter, fueled by 12 points from Young. Every time the Liberty looked to make a run, Young answered, including a critical and-one layup over Courtney Vandersloot that gave Las Vegas a seven-point lead entering the fourth. She finished that game with 26 points and 4 assists, setting the tone for the series. Game 2 saw Young take control once again. The Liberty had cut a 19-point first-quarter deficit to just 8 points by halftime, but Young reignited the Aces’ fire to start the third. She scored 11 points in the quarter—including six straight points—pushing the lead to 18 at one point. Vegas never looked back, cruising to a 104-76 victory, with Young finishing 24 points, 8 rebounds, and 4 assists. And then there was Game 4, where Young accounted for over half of the Aces’ fourth-quarter points. She scored 9 of the team’s 17 points—including the go-ahead layup with 2:25 remaining and a pair of clutch free throws—to fend off a Liberty squad that seemed on the verge of tying the series. Her quarter takeovers were critical in securing Las Vegas’ second title. Fast-forward to this year’s playoff run, and Young has elevated her game even further. We’ve seen her hit a game-winning putback against Seattle in a winner-advances scenario—a single play that, realistically, helped pave the way for the Aces’ third championship. She recorded a historic Game 5 in the semifinals with the first-ever 30-point, 10-assist, 0-turnover playoff performance, sending the Aces to the Finals. In the Finals, over the last three games, Young averaged (23.7) points, (6.0) rebounds, and (6.3) assists, becoming the first guard—and just the third WNBA player overall—to average 20+ points, 5+ rebounds, and 5+ assists in a Finals series, joining the elite company of Lisa Leslie and Maya Moore. When the conversation turns to the best guards in the league right now, Jackie Young belongs at the very top. When the conversation expands to the greatest guards of all time, she will unquestionably be in the mix when she hangs up her sneakers. With three WNBA championships under her belt, her legacy is only continuing to grow—and the quiet rise of Jackie Young is a story every basketball fan should be paying attention to. ✨
