Took the infant son to a public open day at a model railway centre yesterday and it left me in a state of total glee for the rest of the day, and in complete Rule Britannia mode also. Wonderful.

Not even the Bluesky sadcases or the rabbit barrister could bring themselves to take the judge's side in the Fordingbridge case and BBC News was comfortable to lead this morning with the victim's dismay at the sentence. Things appear to be shifting

@OriginJo That doesn't really make much difference in pubs though. Means you can't sell a pint of 5% lager for less than £1.42, or 97p for a John Smith's. Very few pubs in any danger of trying that

There's an amount of segmentation here too of course. My local in Cardiff will sell you a pint of Brains Bitter at £2.65 (Mon-Thur) but charge £6.15 a Cruzcampo (UK brewed) in the same round

@SimpGanassi @PunishedRWR When the 2nd preferences for the rightwing anti-immigration Irish Freedom Party were allocated at the last European election in Dublin, Dr Umar Al-Qadri picked up 36 votes. Saw a ballot paper in Cardiff that went Conservative, Conservative, Communist.

@PunishedRWR I stood as a paper candidate for Labour in a two member ward when I was a student. I got ~200 more votes than my co-candidate, largely because a lot of people voting for an anti-student Independent candidate (who is now in restore) gave their second vote to me for some reason!

People who aren't normally very parochial get incredibly parochial on the topic of supermarkets. The British supermarket system is especially efficient and competitive and keeps food costs unusually low despite stagnating incomes, our food is relatively cheap

Such a scam that right wingers have suddenly switched to 'profit margins' when discussing supermarkets, because its far easier to say 'oh poor Tesco is scraping by on a 2% profit margin' rather than consider whether Tesco making £3bn a year while people starve is good

@DuncanStott @microengineer It was, there were just hardly any trans people around so it didn't matter as much. Transgender former child antique expert Lauren Harries used the ladies changing rooms at the leisure centre where my mum worked in the early 2000s and people really didn't like it

@theobertram I guess pensions become a lot less important if the expectation is that you will cohabit with your children and be supported by family in old age? A state pension might be enough by itself in that case
