I love my classroom/office hour/meeting time but professors desperately need to protect longer (3+ hour) time periods where they can work without interruption 😥 Trying to lesson prep for 20 minutes here and there without these blocks of time has been tough the past 3 weeks🫣

@rnsoicher @ennasuite If there are 8 pre-you assignments and they all contribute equally modestly to the grade, do you have the option to let the 50 students pick one of those 8 to drop from factoring in to their grade? Or you by default drop the lowest scoring of the 8?

@ennasuite It's not a lot to accommodate one student, but then on that principle, I'd need to allow 50 students the option of resubmitting up to 8 assignments (that's how many went ungraded by the previous instructor). That's absolutely not feasible for me.

I'm out of practice dealing with demanding students. Here's the situation (advice welcome): It's Week 5 of 11 in an online class where the instructor unexpectedly took leave. No assignments had yet been graded in the course...1/

@qc_punk I've started using VMD smoothing windows for scicomm on our sims betwn our lab & other labs (wet labs, for example) It doesn't help if you need very specific 2ndary structure dets, but it definitely mellows the big picture vibe for eyes of collaborators not used to watching sims

Scientific literature about autism existed in the 60s, 70s, and 80s. The 60s through 80s talked about autism through an extremely narrow diagnostic lens. But that research context is as different from 1998 research context, as 1998 research context is from today's.

Particularly, I'm thinking of autism research published in the late 90s, when diagnostic criteria, public awareness, and assessment rates were all much more constricted than they are now. Americans in general only barely knew about autism in the 80s and 90s. A lot has changed!

How would you describe literature published in 1998 with respect to how research and population in question has changed in the last 25 years? "Early research"? "Earlier research"? How far back to you need to go before cited research becomes "early"? #AcademicChatter #PhDChat
