During the Battle of Ramillies, Marlborough’s horse threw him. As an aide dismounted to help him back into the saddle, his aide was decapitated by a cannon shot. Marlborough remounted and carried on. That is the forgotten age. Our episode drops Saturday. #ForgottenAge

Clue 2: At one battle, I was so mortally ill that I was forced to direct my troops from my coach. Despite my condition, Prince Eugene noted that I fought to "admiration," leading the great turning movement that trapped the enemy right wing. #PrimeAndLoad #ForgottenAge #QuizSunday

@PrimeandLoad Prince Eugene, only person I know of who had capital ships named for him in three separate navies. British, Austrian-Hungarian and German.

I am the Marshal who became the Duke of Marlborough’s most loyal partner during the War of the Spanish Succession. Unlike many of my cautious countrymen, I frequently advocated for bold offensive action. Who am I?" #PrimeAndLoad #ForgottenAge #QuizSunday

At Blenheim in 1704, Marlborough struck at the French flank, forced them to draw reserves, then drove straight through the centre. Napoleon studied this. The technique that made Austerlitz possible was pioneered in the War of Spanish Succession a century earlier. #ForgottenAge

@PrimeandLoad @AndrewBamford10 I wish I could agree with that statement, but I can't. I guess it's because of Marlborough, WSS outshines the Nine Years War, The Franco-Dutch. In fact, all Louis XiV's wars are far better subject to study tbh. He wasn't the longest European reigning monarch for no reason &...

The War of Spanish Succession lasted 13 years and reshuffled the map of Europe but almost nobody, outside dedicated military historians, can name a single battle. This is the forgotten war that decided shaped Europe for the next century. #PrimeAndLoad #ForgottenAge

@PrimeandLoad I guess my question would be is how accurate are the numbers? I'm guessing this is by population % but how accurate are the numbers for a place like Poland or Ruthenia? Did the state have the capacity to track pre-war population numbers and wartime civilian deaths accurately?

May 23 marks the 320th anniversary of one of the most decisive afternoons in European history. Marlborough knew the ground around Ramillies. He just needed to get the French there. Our episode drops on the anniversary. Nine days. #ForgottenAge #Ramillies

@PrimeandLoad In Britain almost nobody (who isn't a military historian) could name you any battle beyond Hastings or Waterloo... Maybe Trafalgar and D-Day...
