Project Sprout aligns with plans to propose legislation that would subsidize fruits and vegetables to lower the cost of nutritious food and would require restaurants and grocery stores to donate surplus edible food rather than discard it.

“If we have enough money and resources to end hunger, then why hasn’t it ended?” That’s the question Sizer School sophomores want to answer. We welcomed them to our office to listen to their presentation on hunger and their proposed solution, the grassroots org “Project Sprout.”

“Sometimes they miss breakfast at home and they can feel like they’re safe here, to have food here, and not worry about being hungry,” says school nutrition manager Susie Judge. “It’s great that we give them free meals, and they don’t have to worry about having to buy breakfast.”

Hosmer Elementary School takes breakfast seriously. Shortly before 8am, school nutrition staff prepared to welcome hungry students to their breakfast cart before classes began. As soon as the bell rang, students lined up to get their French toast sticks, cereal, and fruit.

A nutritious morning meal helps sharpen focus, boost energy, and support overall well-being. Since Massachusetts began offering free school meals to all students, 73,500 more children are enjoying school breakfast daily (comparing October 2019 to October 2023).
