Project Hail Mary feels like a radical act of optimism, proof that high-stakes sci-fi doesn’t have to be cynical. It finds awe in curiosity, connection, and the idea that even the most ordinary person can rise to meet something extraordinary.

Ok, first impressions of Project Hail Mary: There couldn’t be a better, more faithful visual re-telling of the book imaginable. It’s really quite beautiful and very moving when it’s supposed to be and hilarious and exciting all the other times. But the visuals! It leaps off the screen with color and light and astonishing detail besides. Easily the best thing @philiplord and @chrizmillr have done in their already astonishing careers. Go see it in a movie theater. Trust me. And try the popcorn.

Project Hail Mary, @projecthailmary @andyweirauthor although it is imbued with genuinely original leaps in scientific imagination and occupies spatial extensions of cosmic scale, is finally a classically cozy story of friendship between widely separated but yet resonant souls. It gives an entirely novel meaning to the phrase “sidekick”. In the cosmic age a “side” could be light years apart, and so close together. Having finished the novel, I am now looking forward to enjoying the much hyped film in Tokyo.

Project Hail Mary has become the first film ever to premiere in the stratosphere. A custom IMAX display was sent to 110,000 ft to showcase footage from the film, playing it against the curvature of the Earth itself.
