Pupils from a record 29 Reading primary schools will be taking part in Walk to School Week next week. The Council has funded classroom packs for schools and nurseries which have registered for the national event which aims to get children walking, cycling and scooting to school. The annual week supports the Council’s aims to encourage active travel to school which benefits children’s physical and mental health and reduces traffic congestion and air pollution. Good luck to all families who are taking part in Reading. rdguk.info/VS8l6 #rdguk

A few months ago Reading resident Olivia cut the ribbon to officially open the 46 new homes built for existing residents on the Wensley Road estate. We're pleased to say she's recently moved in to her new home on the estate after more than 20 years in one of the tower blocks - here she is showing off her new home on an initial visit prior to moving in to her fantastic flat. We're now moving on to improving the tower blocks with new windows, refurbished lifts, landscaping and replacing all outside insulation amongst other things to continue our regeneration of the estate.

Reading’s residents have been giving generously to Tap for Reading since last January. Here’s a heartfelt account from YMCA Reading General Manager Jayne Evanson of how your support is helping one of our four local homelessness charities… “YMCA Reading houses 40 young people for up to eighteen months, who would have been homeless or at risk of homelessness. Tap for Reading money supports our work and is a brilliant resource to support those who find themselves homeless or at risk of homelessness. “Since the scheme started YMCA have been able to assist 31 of our residents, 9 of whom have moved into private rented accommodation. The Tap for Reading money has enabled us to provide: •Basic kitchen equipment to support with cooking, meal planning and healthy eating. This has enabled staff to teach the skills of batch cooking on a budget. •Duvets & bedding to ensure they have a cosy place to sleep and learn about cleanliness, regular bed changing and laundry. •Baby blenders to our young parent residents, to enable them to wean their babies and prepare fresh meals rather than rely on processed foods. •Vacuums, mops, and cleaning items, to enable the staff to support with housekeeping skills and ways to maintain a clean and health property. “Tap for Reading has enabled our residents to learn skills that will stay with them and support them to maintain their forever homes after they leave us. “Every penny donated to YMCA Reading through Tap for Reading is spent to build independence. To all that have Tapped for Reading to raise funds- thank you!” See how you can donate online and help people in need in Reading in the comments ➡️
