Cato is a hero to libertarians because he 'stood up to Caesar.' He is a fitting hero to libertarians, because his grand stand was ripping out his own intestines in a fit of rage rather than living in a Rome that allowed a populist like Caesar a second term as Consul. The greatest irony, of course, is that had Cato compromised with Caesar, as Cicero did, he would have been in position to help manage the fallout of the Liberatores having absolutely no plan—as Cicero did—and likely would have saved the Republic as a result. Instead, Cicero was a one-man-band, the last competent creature of the Senate standing, and had only so many political tricks up his sleeve to outrun Marc Antony's ire. Had Cato been willing to do anything other than k*ll himself in an act of principled protest, we'd probably all know stories about how Cato and Cicero saved the Roman Republic, instead of stories about how Caesar, Octavian, and Marc Antony founded the Roman Empire. Something something history, something something rhymes.
