Until we center pedagogy and curriculum around the most deprived and marginalized students, we will be creating structures that are barriers to them but favorable to those of privilege.

It’s perfectly fine for students to be disengaged some days. We are still in a pandemic and they are still dealing with trauma. A student can’t learn if their social well-being isn’t being supported. Acknowledge their feelings.

Students were isolated during remote learning, my major focus this year is finding multiple ways for them to hold meaningful discussions: -Student-led dialogue -Developing lesson questions -Collaborative problem solving S/O to @chrisemdin for pushing my thinking with his 7 Cs.

Let’s normalize asking questions and making mistakes in our classrooms to promote confidence. Our students’ curiosity should be nurtured and growth encouraged. Many times when kids are talking in class, they’re confused and asking peers for help. Take a step back and listen.

Schools are quick to label Black and Brown students as delinquents but fail to acknowledge how their school culture neglects a sense of belonging for them. If a student dreads going to school, then we have to ask ourselves what we are doing wrong.

School districts pushing for diversity and integration without proper policies supporting marginalized groups, are actually causing more trauma on our students. Don’t avoid the work around cultural competency. MLK said it “I fear I am integrating my people into a burning house.”

Dress code and hairstyle school policies can be racially and gender exclusive, forcing students to assimilate and conform. It is a tactic to remove our self-worth and identity. Make sure to examine all policies with a racial-intersectionality lens for equity.

It’s no secret, if we want to lower crime rates we need to fund our schools. We need: ⁃After school programs ⁃Extra-curricular activities ⁃Free breakfast/lunch programs ⁃Partnerships with grassroot organizations ⁃Mentor programs

Way too many educators who use social media as spaces of anti-racist and CRT learning are targeted and harassed daily by racist who hate our work. Make sure if you enjoy and learn from us, find ways to amplify and protect our voices. Don’t let the negativity drown our energy.

A student once told me they couldn’t wait to grow up so they could start changing the world. I told them they didn’t have to wait that long, they could start now. Our young people can play a major influence in bringing about change. Let them know their worth.

About a year ago hundreds of NYC teachers and admins came together demanding our city to properly fund education and resources. We asked for: all schools to develop anti-racist professional learning plans specific to the needs of their school community;

You know what’s cooler than going to space? Funding education programs with STEM opportunities for students who have been deprived of tech resources.
