@MarkCHealey When I was in my teens, I bore a physical resemblance to Lee Mazzilli, which also included wearing glasses and playing center field. One of the few bright spots in a very dark era of Mets baseball ✌️

When Lee Mazzilli made his MLB debut in 1976, I was an instant fan. Little did I know that the kid from Brooklyn would be the main reason I survived the Seaver trade in 1977. Rooting for him was the main reason I got through the Grant's Tomb years. Years later, I was sitting in the picnic bleachers at Shea when he was in town playing for the Pirates. He threw me a ball, and it was the first and last time that ever happened. I was overjoyed when the Mets traded for Lee in 1986, and even more pleased when he was a factor in the team's eventual World Series win. In 2001, I got my first national column assignment at AP, entitled Safe at Home, in which I wrote about the challenges of playing in one's hometown. I was at Yankee Stadium and got the chance to interview Lee Mazzilli in the clubhouse. He was great and spent more time with me than I asked for. So Happy Birthday Lee, and I hope you have a great day!

I remember when the Mets were getting eviscerated for letting Kelenic go to Seattle in the Cano/Diaz trade back in 2018. Since making his MLB debut in 2021, he’s a career 0.2 WAR player with a .211/.282/.376 slash line across 407 games. He turns 27 in July; officially a bust?
