@Cooperannuation Hey @Cooperannuation While not a perfect fix I thought that stapling was lesser evil than multiple accounts being opened up blindly, plus (not part of design of course but) 1st funds are generally better performers. Interested to know what data shows?

afr.com/technology/2b-… - the real story here is that #super stapling is bad policy. Why would you ‘staple’ a worker to the default fund of the workplace they have left behind? The data already show that stapling isn’t working. Papering it over with restrictions won’t fix it.

@JeremyKwongLaw a) Means they can allocate more assets to growth, not just to paying pensions so better returns for all, b) Some funds have very customised insurance (eg higher risk jobs). Agree that logical end point is 1 but there are many more steps before that. And some competition is good.

@robertbarnes 👋🏽 Robert. How does fund in/out flow benefit members? Doesn’t insurance end up being priced by a consolidated pool of insurers. Super being the funnel only? If so, most of these reasons come back to scale. Logical end point is 1 industry fund bc they don’t differentiate 🤷🏻‍♂️

What’s the industrial logic, *for the members*, of an industry fund merging w A vs B industry fund? Highest duplication / greatest cost out? Genuinely interested 🤔 afr.com/personal-finan…

@JeremyKwongLaw Great to see lots of momentum with mergers now. Probably stronger negotiation getting in sooner than later. In a few years there should be hopeful be a handful of mega funds but may be room for niche funds too.

@JeremyKwongLaw Hey Jeremy - Lots of factors. Opp to better balance demographics. Funds paying out pensions need inflows from young members too. But then similar demos good for insurance. Also consider synergies from different investment approaches, advice, brand.
