Financing Agri-food Systems Sustainably
Empowering Africa through the FINAS Dialogue means creating a results-driven platform that transforms commitments into measurable impact. FINAS has positioned itself as the go-to convening platform driving Africa’s food systems transformation by unlocking innovative solutions and directing capital toward scalable, high-impact opportunities. Across the continent, agrifood systems face pressing challenges: climate change, financing gaps, market inefficiencies, and limited access to technology. FINAS responds by bringing together policymakers, financial institutions, development partners, private sector leaders, and innovators to align strategy, policy, and investment. The Dialogue goes beyond thought leadership. It catalyzes partnerships, strengthens bankable pipelines, de-risks investments, and promotes inclusive financing models that empower SMEs and agrifood enterprises. By bridging the gap between innovation and capital, FINAS accelerates sustainable growth across the entire value chain. As Africa advances toward resilient and climate-smart food systems, FINAS remains central to shaping solutions, mobilizing resources, and delivering real, scalable transformation that benefits communities, markets, and economies continent-wide. #FINAS2026 #FoodSystemsTransformation #SustainableFinance #AfricaAgriculture  #ImpactInvestment

Edible insects are gaining traction as a sustainable protein source in Kenya’s evolving food systems. With rising demand for affordable, nutritious, and climate-resilient food options, research institutions and agritech innovators are exploring crickets, locusts, and other insects as viable alternatives to traditional protein. Nutritional value: High in protein, vitamins, and minerals. Sustainability: Require minimal land, water, and feed compared to livestock. Food security impact: Offer scalable solutions to address hunger and malnutrition. As Kenya advances climate-smart agriculture and invests in food security, edible insects could play a pivotal role in diversifying diets and strengthening resilience.

Across rural Africa, barriers such as limited collateral, restrictive social norms, and distance from financial institutions continue to restrict women’s access to finance. But behind these familiar challenges lies an overlooked opportunity, the potential of digital financial services (DFS) to expand access, build confidence, and give women greater control over their resources. Over the past decade, Africa has become a global leader in digital payments. According to the GSMA Mobile Money Report 2024, the continent now accounts for about 65 percent of the world’s mobile money transaction value and nearly three quarters of all transactions.

Globally, 1/3 of all food produced is lost or wasted. That’s enough to feed billions! In many African countries, much of this happens after harvest due to poor storage and transport. Food waste isn’t just about hunger, it also causes 8–10% of global greenhouse gas emissions. By improving storage, redistributing surplus, and changing consumer habits, we can save food, money, and the planet. #StopFoodWaste #FoodSecurity

Did you know? Livestock are one of the biggest sources of methane, a greenhouse gas that warms the planet 28 times faster than CO₂. Most of it comes from cattle digestion and manure. With rising demand for meat and dairy, methane emissions are climbing but solutions exist. From better feed and manure management to shifting diets, we can cut emissions and protect our climate.

𝐇𝐨𝐧𝐨𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐋𝐞𝐠𝐚𝐜𝐲 𝐨𝐟 𝐄𝐫𝐢𝐜 𝐊𝐢𝐦𝐮𝐧𝐠𝐮𝐲𝐢: 𝐀 𝐂𝐡𝐚𝐦𝐩𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐒𝐮𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐢𝐧𝐚𝐛𝐥𝐞 𝐀𝐠𝐫𝐢𝐜𝐮𝐥𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐞 The agricultural community in Kenya and beyond is mourning the loss of Eric Kimunguyi, the Chief Executive Officer of the Agrochemicals Association of Kenya (aak-GROW/@CropLifeKenya ), who passed away recently. His departure leaves a profound void in the sector, but his vision, leadership, and unwavering commitment to sustainable farming practices will continue to inspire generations. Eric was more than a leader; he was a bridge-builder. In 2023, through him, we partnered with aak-GROW at the GLOBALG.A.P. Tourstop, supporting the event through exhibition and generous donations of branded giveaways, including t-shirts that became a symbol of unity during field visits. His contributions went beyond sponsorship - he embodied the spirit of collaboration, ensuring that farmers, regulators, and industry players worked hand in hand toward safer and more productive agriculture. This year, at the GLOBALG.A.P. Tourstop 2025, Eric once again demonstrated his dedication to advancing agricultural dialogue. As a panelist in a fireside chat on The Status of Banned Pesticide Molecules, he engaged in a candid discussion with Fredrick Muchiri, CEO of the Pest Control Products Board (PCPB). Eric’s insights were both pragmatic and visionary. He reminded delegates and stakeholders in general that Africa uses comparatively smaller quantities of pesticides per hectare, yet emphasized the urgent need to strengthen Integrated Pest Management (IPM) adoption. His call was clear—reduce dependency on chemicals while safeguarding yields. Eric also championed the harmonization of regional standards within the East African Community (EAC), warning that fragmented regulations risk creating trade distortions. He urged for deeper understanding of international regulatory dynamics, positioning Africa not as a passive recipient of global policies but as an active participant shaping its agricultural future. Beyond his professional achievements, Eric will be remembered for his humility, generosity, and ability to connect with people. His presence at industry events was not just about policy and science—it was about people, about ensuring that farmers felt supported and that the agricultural sector remained resilient in the face of global challenges. Rootooba pays tribute to Eric Kimunguyi as a visionary leader, a trusted partner, and a friend of the farming community. His legacy is one of courage, collaboration, and commitment to sustainable agriculture. While his voice may be gone, his message endures: that Africa’s agricultural future depends on innovation, unity, and a shared responsibility to protect both people and the planet. Rest in peace, Eric Kimunguyi. Your impact will continue to grow in the fields you nurtured and the lives you touched.

Did you know that 30–40% of fruits and vegetables in countries like Kenya are lost due to inadequate storage infrastructure? Cold storage facilities are changing this reality by keeping produce fresh longer and ensuring farmers earn more from their harvests. Here’s why cold storage matters: Reduced food waste: Extends shelf life of perishable crops from just a few days to weeks. Food security boost: Ensures consumers access fresh, nutritious food year-round. Sustainable solutions: Solar-powered cold rooms, like those offered by innovators such as SokoFresh, provide off-grid, eco-friendly storage. Economic empowerment: Farmers and traders can sell more produce at better prices instead of losing income to spoilage. Part of the cold chain: Cold storage works best when integrated with transport, packaging, and market display to minimize losses across the entire supply chain.
