Let’s be clear: Islamophobia has no place in our society. No Canadian should be subjected to harassment, intimidation or violence, especially, at their place of worship. I recently visited the @TICmasjid and heard from community members about the horrific threats they have received. This week, a family leaving the centre was harassed and a child was assaulted. This is completely unacceptable and must stop. We stand with all Muslim-Canadians in condemning any acts of Islamophobia and hate.  I’m grateful for the rapid work of law enforcement in making an arrest related to this incident. We all have a responsibility when it comes to combatting islamophobia, antisemitism and all other hate-motivated violence in Canada.

Thank you to Minister of Public Safety @gary_srp for joining us today in Toronto to discuss Bill C-22. The law enforcement sector has long advocated for the modernization of lawful access provisions to help apprehend violent criminals, investigate homicides, child sexual exploitation and violent extremism - when acting quickly is crucial for public safety.

When Canada’s police chiefs are telling us that their investigations into extortion, child predators, human trafficking, and other crimes are hindered because of outdated laws, government must act. Behind every one of those investigations is a real victim — a child waiting to be found, a family torn apart by trafficking, a person living in fear of their extorter. They deserve better than laws that haven’t kept pace with the digital world. This is not a partisan issue. This is a public safety issue. OPP Commissioner and Canadian Association of Chiefs of Police President Thomas Carrique is calling on all of us as parliamentarians — regardless of party — to put politics aside and pass Bill C-22. Public safety isn’t a partisan issue. Giving investigators the tools they need to solve crimes in the digital age shouldn’t be either.

Crimes like extortion, child exploitation and human trafficking leave digital footprints. Getting that information in Canada can take weeks or months and investigations go cold. Bill C-22 proposed by the Carney government aims to give police faster access to help stop crime and protect victims. This bill is legislation which I, @ChiefNish and law enforcement across the country actively pleaded with the government to introduce as a necessary step for a safer Canada. We implore for the speedy passage of this legislation. Canada will be safer when it passes. I hope the legislation receives parliamentary priority by the government and all party consent from opposition parties. Canada is the only Five Eyes county that doesn't provide this tool to law enforcement. servingbrampton.ca/digital-eviden…

The Police Association of Ontario supports Bill C-22, the Lawful Access Act, which will provide police with the digital tools needed to investigate crime and protect our communities in a rapidly changing world. We’re encouraged by the government’s efforts to balance public safety with privacy, and urge all Parliamentarians to advance Bill C-22 so our laws keep pace with technology and keep Ontarians safe.

Proud to visit the Rogers Cybersecure Catalyst right here in Brampton — Canada’s most active cybersecurity hub and one of our most powerful tools in the fight against modern digital crime. Crime has gone digital. Fraud, organized crime, human trafficking, and terrorism increasingly operate online — and our response has to match that reality. The Catalyst does exactly that. They run immersive bootcamps training officers to become cybercrime investigators, building world-leading law enforcement units. Their new Law Enforcement Market Access Program connects Canadian tech innovators directly with the RCMP, OPP, and municipal police to get cutting-edge tools into the hands of the people who need them most. And it’s backed by real investment — the Government of Canada committed $10M as a founding partner, part of over $56M raised toward this mission. The result? 10,000+ cybersecurity professionals trained and 500+ Canadian businesses hiring their graduates. This is what tough on crime looks like in 2026 — smart, strategic, and built right here in Canada. 🇨🇦🔐

Criminals behind transnational and organized crime, including extortion, cyber-enabled child exploitation, and human trafficking, have far outpaced existing lawful access authorities. Modern and accessible tools for officers will help investigate these crimes effectively - and faster. Time is of the essence. Today, I was honoured to join Secretary of State @RubySahotaLib in thanking @Safety_Canada for these welcomed amendments to lawful access and for their continued partnership in keeping our communities safe. @CACP_ACCP @OACPOfficial @gurpartapstoor @Reid4Ward9 @DC_Milinovich @gary_srp @SeanFraserMP @patrickbrownont

I have been raising the need to modernize Canada’s laws so police can keep pace with organized crime networks exploiting digital technologies. This has neen a major advocacy point for @PeelPolice, @DC_Milinovich and @ChiefNish. I personally raised this issue directly with Prime Minister Carney, and I want to thank him, and the Government of Canada for taking action. This legislation will go a long way in supporting law enforcement’s efforts to combat sophisticated transnational crime. Well done! 👏🏼 – Patrick Brown, Mayor of Brampton @SeanFraserMP @gary_srp @rubysahotalib @StamatakisCPA @iHarkiratSingh

Bill C-22 modernizes Canada’s investigative laws for the digital age. The last time these laws were updated, smartphones didn’t even exist. This legislation gives law enforcement the tools to tackle extortion, child exploitation, fraud and more, with judicial oversight.

Today, we tabled Bill C-22 because the digital world cannot be a safe haven for predators, traffickers, and extortionists. Every day, investigators are racing against time chasing leads, protecting victims, and building cases where hours can mean the difference between justice and devastation. For too long, the tools available to our law enforcement partners haven’t kept pace with the crimes they’re pursuing. They came to Parliament. We listened. Bill C-22 creates a lawful access regime that gives police the legal framework they need to move at the speed investigations demand while at the same time ensuring the privacy protections Canadians expect. That’s why this bill was created through extensive consultation with law enforcement, service providers, academics, and civil society organizations. Proud to stand alongside the Minister of Public Safety, the Minister of Justice, the Ottawa Police Chief, Peel Police, the RCMP, the Toronto Police Chief, O.P.P Commissioner, CSIS and fellow colleagues. This is what it looks like when government and law enforcement work together for survivors, for safety, and for a Canada where no criminal can hide behind a screen.
