Mr. Elias Magosi, held a bilateral meeting with the Executive Director of the Loss and Damage Fund, Mr. Ibrahima Cheikh Diong, to discuss enhanced collaboration on climate resilience and support for vulnerable communities across the SADC region. The engagement reiterated SADC’s commitment to working closely with the Fund for Responding to Loss and Damage (FRLD) as it advances the operationalisation of policies and procedures aimed at supporting developing countries affected by climate change. Discussions underscored the urgent need for increased global resources to address the growing scale of climate-induced loss and damage, estimated at approximately USD 400 billion annually for developing countries. The meeting also highlighted the importance of strengthening technical support and capacity-building to enable SADC Member States to effectively access and utilise the Fund. SADC further emphasised that the operationalisation of the Loss and Damage Fund is not only a financing issue, but also a matter of climate justice, equity, and survival for vulnerable populations facing the adverse effects of climate change. The meeting builds on previous engagements between the SADC Executive Secretary and the Executive Director of the Loss and Damage Fund held in Abidjan and New York, reflecting the growing partnership between the two institutions in advancing sustainable development and climate resilience in the region.

Senior Officials of the Southern African Development Community (SADC) Committee responsible for Agriculture, Food Security, Fisheries and Aquaculture commenced their meeting in Victoria Falls, Zimbabwe, ahead of the Ministerial Meeting scheduled for 29th May 2026 to discuss measures towards enhancing food security and the blue economy in the region. Chairperson of the SADC Committee of Senior Officials responsible for Responsible for Agriculture and Food Security, and Fisheries and Aquaculture, Mr Mooketsa Ramasodi, Director General in the Department of Agriculture of the Republic of South Africa called for decisive and coordinated action, stressing that the regional response needs to be characterised by the ability to balance immediate relief with structural measures that enhance resilience. Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Agriculture, Mechanisation and Water Resources Development of the Republic of Zimbabwe, Prof. dr. Obert Jiri, stressed that no single SADC Member State can solve food insecurity, low productivity, or fisheries challenges alone. He highlighted that the meeting has been convened at a "critical juncture," with the agenda reflecting interconnected challenges from climate shocks and transboundary animal diseases such as Foot and Mouth Disease to global input supply disruptions caused by geopolitical tensions like the on-going conflict in the Middle East. On his part, the Director of Food, Agriculture and Natural Resources at the SADC Secretariat, Mr. Fahari Marwa, called for collective resolve to make SADC safer, more resilient, and more prosperous for all its citizens. He emphasised that fisheries and aquaculture are critical for food security, nutrition, jobs, and growth, urging sustainable management to bridge the fish supply gap. He highlighted the importance of the SADC Plant Genetic Resources Centre as a lifeline for crop breeding and disaster response and called on Member States to fast-track the Animal Genetic Resource Centre to support livestock development.

Magosi, accompanied by the Director for Policy, Planning and Resource Mobilisation at the SADC Secretariat, Dr. Mike Masiye, today, 27 May 2026, is participating in the Session on the Role of Institutional Investors in the New African Financial Architecture Forum, being held on the margins of the African Development Bank (AfDB) Annual Meetings in Brazzaville, Republic of Congo. The session brings together policymakers, development finance institutions, private sector leaders and regional stakeholders to explore how African institutional investors can play a greater role in financing the continent’s development priorities, including infrastructure, industrialisation, regional integration and sustainable economic transformation. For SADC, these discussions are particularly significant as the Region continues to advance strategic infrastructure and development programmes under the Regional Indicative Strategic Development Plan (RISDP 2020–2030) and the Regional Infrastructure Development Master Plan (RIDMP). Mobilising long-term domestic and regional capital through pension funds, sovereign wealth funds, insurance institutions and other African institutional investors remains critical to addressing the financing gap for transformative regional projects in energy, transport, water, digital connectivity and industrial development. The Forum also aligns with ongoing continental efforts to strengthen Africa’s financial sovereignty and develop a more responsive and inclusive African financial architecture capable of unlocking sustainable investments for Africa’s development priorities. SADC remains committed to strengthening regional financial cooperation and supporting initiatives that promote an inclusive and self-sustaining African financial system capable of accelerating economic growth, industrialisation and regional integration for the benefit of the people of the Region and the continent at large. #AfDBAM2026 #SADC #RegionalIntegration #AfricanDevelopment #Finance #InstitutionalInvestors

𝐒𝐞𝐲𝐜𝐡𝐞𝐥𝐥𝐞𝐬 𝐕𝐚𝐥𝐢𝐝𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐬 𝐒𝐀𝐃𝐂 𝐀𝐧𝐭𝐢-𝐂𝐨𝐫𝐫𝐮𝐩𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐄𝐟𝐟𝐨𝐫𝐭 𝐈𝐧𝐝𝐞𝐱 (𝐒𝐀𝐂𝐄𝐈) The Republic of Seychelles has taken a step in advancing regional integrity by convening a national stakeholder validation workshop for the Southern African Development Community (SADC) Anti-Corruption Effort Index (SACEI). The workshop brought together representatives from government, civil society, academia, the private sector, media, and development partners to validate findings from Seychelles’ participation in this regional initiative. Anchored in the #SADC Protocol Against Corruption, SACEI is an evidence-based framework that measures Member States’ institutional capacity and concrete actions in combating corruption. Unlike perception-based indices, it evaluates real systems and measurable progress. Seychelles joins Botswana and Namibia in the second cohort of Member States implementing the initiative, following approval by the Ministerial Committee of the Organ in July 2025. The national assessment, led by the Anti-Corruption Commission of Seychelles, engaged a wide range of stakeholders, emphasizing the importance of a whole-of-society approach. Ms. Kealeboga Moruti the Senior Officer of Public Security at the SADC Secretariat commended the Republic of Seychelles for its leadership, noting that SACEI provides objective data to strengthen governance in line with SADC Vision 2050 and the Regional Indicative Strategic Development Plan. Ms. May de Silva, head of the Anti-Corruption Commission of Seychelles, reaffirmed the country’s commitment to integrity, highlighting Seychelles’ ranking as Africa’s least corrupt nation according to the Corruption Perceptions Index. She stressed that participation in SACEI ensures continuous improvement and guides reforms to enhance service delivery, ensuring anti-corruption efforts deliver tangible benefits for citizens. Mr. Ipyana Musopole, Officer for Anti-Corruption and Good Governance at the SADC Secretariat, emphasized that SACEI’s strength lies in its focus on fifteen key areas, including political commitment, funding, procurement systems, anti-money laundering, whistle-blower protection, and private sector participation. This comprehensive approach provides Member States with a roadmap for reform and monitoring progress. The workshop was supported by the European Union-funded Enhancing the Capability and Effectiveness of SADC’s Peace and Security Architecture Programme, which continues to play a vital role in strengthening governance and anti-corruption efforts across the region. #europeanunionbotswana #SADC #sadctowardsacommonfuture #SADCregionalintegration
