U.S. Army Soldiers assigned to the 122nd Engineer Battalion, 117th Engineer Regiment, South Carolina National Guard, assisted the South Carolina Department of Transportation by hauling road salt in support of winter weather operations following Winter Storm Gianna in Batesburg, South Carolina, Feb. 1, 2026. One 10-ton and three 20-ton dump trucks were dispatched out of Batesburg to move approximately 150 tons of salt to Sumter and 100 tons to Bishopville to help improve road conditions. Over 350 service members from the South Carolina Military Department are postured to support Winter Storm Gianna operations, including 14 vehicle recovery teams working under the direction of the South Carolina Highway Patrol. A total of 47 vehicles have been dispatched to aid in these efforts. The South Carolina Army and Air National Guard continue to have general purpose and State Guard troops on standby to support partner agencies. Over the past 24 hours, South Carolina State Guard members have provided support to a food bank in Spartanburg. The South Carolina Military Department has debris-clearing teams on standby and is prepared to assist partner agencies. Emergency Operations Center Liaison Officers (LNOs) are postured in Columbia, Greenville, Rock Hill, Myrtle Beach, and Spartanburg counties. The South Carolina Military Department is committed to supporting our partner agencies and communities. U.S. Army Maj. Ron Peeler, a staff officer assigned to the 228th Theater Tactical Signal Brigade (TTSB), SC National Guard, conducted a pre-mission and safety briefing for the vehicle-recovery teams (VRTs) assigned to respond to Winter Storm Gianna, Spartanburg, South Carolina, Jan. 30, 2026. During the briefing, U.S. Army Col. Jeff A. Heaton and Command Sgt. Maj. Tim Larkin, respectively 228th TTSB’s commander and command sergeant major, addressed the Soldiers before releasing them to their assigned duties. The 228th TTSB committed a total of four VRTs to the emergency-response task force for Winter Storm Gianna. 228th TTSB VRTs are currently staged at various locations in Spartanburg, Fairfield, and Cherokee counties.
