That spirit of supporting the next generation of environmental journalists continues at SEJ conferences. At #SEJ2026, we’ll present the Outstanding Student Reporting Award at the revived Awards Luncheon & host our student newsroom, where fellows report with professional editors.

The project highlighted the links between agriculture, water quality and public policy and showed how student journalists can collaborate across institutions to fill reporting gaps, especially in rural areas.

At #SEJ2025, the Outstanding Student Reporting Award honored “The Price of Plenty,” a cross-university investigation tracing how fertilizer production and runoff affect ecosystems and communities.
