So here it is -- now accepted -- The paper that disentangles Cuba's socialist revolution from Soviet Aid and the US trade embargo. TLDR: The embargo explains nothing, Soviet aid ... aided (duh), and the Revolution takes the lion's share.

Data centers are targeted not because of the actual things activists complain about, but because it’s a way for people who are conspiratorial or hate capitalism to express themselves. And that’s a lot of people.

Over at Substack, @JoshEakle asks: "It's 2026, and I have yet to see an anti-almond farm protest."

“Statism is a system of institutionalized violence and perpetual civil war. It leaves men no choice but to fight to seize political power - to rob or be robbed, to kill or be killed... Statism survives by looting; a free country survives by production.” — Ayn Rand

The absence of a price for being wrong produces exactly the kind of confidence the 108 demonstrated. None of them will lose tenure, citations, or their next book contract. Not for Argentina, and not for the next prediction either.

Thomas Sowell described the mechanism. A doctor who kills a patient loses a license. An engineer whose bridge collapses loses a career. An economist whose endorsed regime ruins a country loses nothing, and frequently gains tenure, prestige, and a wider audience.

In October 2023, 108 economists, including Thomas Piketty and Gabriel Zucman, signed an open letter warning that Javier Milei would devastate Argentina if he won in November. Major outlets treated it as settled consensus. He won, and this is what actually happened. 🧵

Duranty had access, prestige, a salary, and a regime willing to grant or withdraw all three. Jones had a notebook and his feet. While the truth travels on foot, the lie travels with a chauffeur, sleeps in a four-room apartment, and decades after the bodies were buried still hangs on the wall of the paper that printed it.

Duranty died in Florida in 1957. The Pulitzer remained on his shelf. In 2003, after a Columbia University review, the Pulitzer board declined to revoke the prize, citing the absence of "clear and convincing evidence of deliberate deception." The New York Times still lists Duranty among its Pulitzer winners. A discreet footnote on its website acknowledges that the work has been "discredited." The prize stays. The line on the website stays. The dead are not consulted in the matter.

In 1932, a New York Times correspondent won the Pulitzer Prize for explaining to Americans that Stalin's famine in Ukraine wasn't happening. Between 3.5 and 7.5 million Ukrainians were already starving to death. The Pulitzer was never revoked. 🧵
