On October 17, 2005, in Iraq, a Bradley fighting vehicle was ripped open by an IED, flooding the interior with fuel and erupting into flames. Several soldiers were trapped inside, with no obvious escape. Sergeant First Class Alwyn Cashe managed to crawl out, injured and soaked in fuel. Instead of seeking safety, he turned back into the fire. He pulled the driver out, put out the flames on his body, and then went to the rear of the vehicle to rescue more soldiers. Cashe’s uniform caught fire, and his skin was severely burned, but he kept returning to the inferno, dragging out his fellow soldiers one after another. Seven men survived because he refused to stop, even as he was engulfed in flames. With seventy-two percent of his body burned, Cashe still insisted that wounded soldiers be evacuated first. His first concern was for his men, asking, “How are my boys?” rather than his own pain. Cashe died three weeks later from his injuries. Initially awarded the Silver Star, his heroism was recognized sixteen years later with the Medal of Honor. On December 16, 2021, the medal was presented to his widow at the White House a tribute to his selfless courage, paid for long after the fire was extinguished.

Colonel William F. Andrews is one of the most decorated airmen of the 1991 Gulf War. He received the Air Force Cross for heroism after he was shot down on February 28, 1991. He was captured and held prisoner for eight days, for which he received the POW Medal. Col. Andrews also received the Distinguished Flying Cross with Valor for his actions during Desert Storm.
