Yet another impressive result for Como over the weekend. Their upward trajectory under Cesc Fàbregas continues, as they sit 4th in Serie A in just their second season in the top flight. Alongside that progress, there’s a clear focus on strengthening the connection between academy and first team environments. As explained below by Head of Development @Osian_Roberts, a key part of this is giving Primavera (U19) and U17 players regular exposure to first team training. This builds familiarity with the physical, tactical & mental demands, so that when opportunities come, players are prepared. A superb season for Everton so far. Here’s an example of the players hitting max speeds in training. Aside from improving sprint performance, research shows that players who hit >90% of their max speed 1-2 per week in training, suffer fewer muscular injuries than players who hit <85%. @AshmanAFP They’re generally directed to go at 70%, 80% and then all out maximally. If players don’t hit >90-95% they can sometimes be asked to go again until they do. Within reason, obviously.

We’ve been talking about this issue for the guts of two years now. If you’ve games every 3-4 days, you can’t train effectively because players need time to recover sufficiently. If you can’t train effectively, it’s very difficult to load athletes properly to cope with the game demands. According to the research, the Premier League’s physical demands have increased exponentially in the last ten years. This is not new. But it is getting worse every year with added games, minutes, travel, etc. It’s a vicious cycle that puts immense pressure on clubs competing on multiple fronts.

One of the most common things we hear from coaches is⤵️ 
“I thought GPS was just for professional teams.”

The reality is that it’s being used far beyond elite sport, all over the world.

Rosario YFC are based in Belfast and compete at the equivalent of the 4th tier of Northern Irish football, just below national level.

Have seen a few Tottenham fans commenting on how much fitter the squad looks, and how much more they’re running in games compared to the previous coaching setup. When a manager changes, physical output is generally tied directly to the game model. Tudor plays man-to-man, which naturally drives higher high-intensity running demands. He even mentioned early on that the squad might not have been at the required fitness level to execute his style consistently. One of the quickest ways to raise that baseline is simple conditioning work like box-to-box tempo runs. Not sure of the exact target here, but 72 m in ~10–12 seconds sits right in the high-intensity running zone, so the aim is likely building repeat high-speed capacity rather than pure sprint speed. Normally you wouldn’t see full-squad conditioning blocks like this during the season. With congested fixtures, most fitness work comes through football-based training. Long story short: tempo runs are a very effective way to raise physical capacity quickly, but for elite players, this type of work is usually done in pre-season, not mid-season. Drills like this are typically monitored live on the sideline, using absolute and relative speed thresholds to make sure each player hits the right intensity for their individual fitness level. Tactics and “elite IQ” as you put it definitely helps with positioning and decision-making, but neuromuscular fatigue is still neuromuscular fatigue. If sprint load, congestion and total minutes are higher, freshness is going to be affected and will hurt EPL teams. Not the only factor obviously, but definitely not over-played either.

I don’t dispute the data or that fatigue plays a part - but it’s over-played. Couple of points: - managers need to have more flexible game plans. Every game doesn’t need high sprints & high intensity. Eg - Slot’s first season was refreshing as he’d somehow found a balance of intensity with more in-game rest than Klopp managed. - Core players carry the biggest load yes and are happy to do so. Fatigue isn’t a factor for them. - players like Pedric, Modric and Vitinha will run rings round PL sides any day of the week as they’re simply elite minds - they dont need to be athletes cos their brains put them in the right place and make the right decisions. Still so much for English football to learn.

A lazy excuse is an ironically funny way to put it. There's nothing lazy about it. And it's not about teams doing +12km - total distance covered isn't a factor. The latest Premier League research (Allen and Taberner, 2025) is clear on what's been happening over the last 10 years: - Sprint distance ↑ ~40% over the last decade - High Speed distance ↑ ~23% - Match intensity per minute ↑ significantly - Top-six players exposed to more total minutes across the season - 'Top 6' squads also carry a higher % of congested minutes (3 games in 8 days) Coaches can rotate, but the core players still carry the biggest load, especially in top teams. Fatigue is obviously part of the equation.

@statsports This is a lazy excuse. Coaches know how to manage squad availability especially with big games coming up. The real reason is that English teams just lack game IQ. Elite European sides like Real, PSG know how to run & manage games. It’s not all about running 12km

The point is poorly made in terms of how they’re defining “competitiveness”… But the most up to date research is clear: the Premier League is the most physically demanding league in club football. They also play more games (league cup, FA cup, EPL). So in theory, English clubs playing in the Champions League will obviously be more fatigued than their European counterparts.

A remarkable 5-0 win for @SportingCP was bookended by another academy graduate, Rafael Nel - celebrating in the video below - who scored just 4 mins into his UCL debut. Sporting traditionally put huge emphasis on the academy to first team pathway.
