Training battle at the Saint Louis Chess Club ♟️ Hikaru Nakamura and Awonder Liang faced off in a high-level training match as part of Hikaru’s preparation for the FIDE Candidates Tournament. The match featured 2 classical games (both drawn), 4 rapid games where Awonder scored an impressive 3/4, and 4 blitz games with all decisive results but an even 2–2 finish. A great fighting session between two elite players—wishing both Awonder and Hikaru the very best in their upcoming tournaments! 💪♟️ 📸 Lennart Ootes #STLChessClub

Day 9 Recap – American Cup ♟️ History made in the Open section as Wesley So clinches his first-ever American Cup title! After achieving a comfortable drawing position against Levon Aronian, the players repeated moves, securing the result that crowned Wesley champion and left Aronian as runner-up. Another milestone moment in Wesley’s career. Meanwhile, the Women’s section delivered pure drama. Carissa Yip and Alice Lee battled relentlessly, with the second classical game ending in a draw and sending the match into blitz playoffs. The tension only escalated from there—decisive games all the way to Armageddon, where Carissa came out on top. That win keeps the fight alive and forces a rapid tiebreak tomorrow on the final day. Defending champion Alice Lee vs. challenger Carissa Yip, who is chasing her first American Cup title. Everything will be decided tomorrow. 🔥 📸 Lennart Ootes #AmericanCup

American Cup – Day 8 Recap ♟️ It was the first day of the Grand Finals at the American Cup. Wesley So delivered a convincing win against Levon Aronian and now needs only a draw tomorrow to clinch the title. Will Aronian manage to force a playoff? We’ll find out soon. In the women’s section, things were a bit more topsy-turvy. Carissa Yip drew with Alice Lee. Yip had the better position out of the opening, but a few inaccuracies allowed the position to worsen. She defended resourcefully, and once the dust settled there was nothing left to play for, with both players agreeing to a draw. Tomorrow could decide who will be crowned the 2026 American Cup champions. ♟️🏆 📸 Lennart Ootes #AmericanCup
