@GreenBeltMovmnt To ensure sustainable development and environmdntal resilience, we must prioritise forest protection & restoration over competing land use interests.

Meet Purity Lukara. An @ifawglobal Lioness Ranger Ahead of Day 1, we got to listen to her story. This is her first time in Samburu, and she is here alongside community women from Amboseli as a fellow learner in the journey toward safer coexistence. Purity is one of three rangers joining 12 community women for this training. We heard what brought her to this work, what she hopes to gain from these next few days, and why she believes that community women and rangers learning side by side is the future of conservation. This is what Living Safely with Wildlife looks like: rangers and community women together, sharing knowledge, building the collaboration that protects both people and wildlife. Stand Up Shout Out and our partners working alongside communities and rangers to strengthen the systems that make coexistence real. Training begins @ste_kenya Over a span of three days, these 15 women will be equipped with the tools, technology, and knowledge to become Early Warning System Ambassadors within the Ubuntu Network. EarthRanger. GPS. MIKE protocols. Elephant behavior. Community-led early warning systems. The technical backbone of Living Safely with Wildlife is being built right here, right now. This is about creating a future where women are empowered and equipped to be at the frontlines of conservation. Where collaboration between communities, rangers, and organizations is not an aspiration but a reality. Where coexistence is not a struggle but a system built on shared knowledge, mutual respect, and collective action. Day 1. Samburu. 15 women ready to transform how we live alongside wildlife.

You can’t spell coexistence without community. And for us, that’s not wordplay. That’s the work. Coexistence takes a community. Every elder. Every mother. Every child. Every ranger. Every neighbour sharing land with wildlife. And we are privileged to sit in the middle of it, holding it together, building with it, learning from it. At Stand Up Shout Out, coexistence isn’t a concept. It’s a practice we live. And it doesn’t start with infrastructure. It starts with dignity. Because when a community is seen, heard, equipped, and empowered, it protects the wildlife around it. Not by force. But willingly. Proudly. From a place of ownership. Dignity for communities equals protection for wildlife. That’s the equation. That’s the foundation everything else is built on. Across every landscape we work in, the approach may look different, but the root is always the same: Ubuntu and dignity. We bring water closer to homes that once walked hours for it. We build enterprise where there was dependency. We put tools, training, and income into the hands of women. We invest in livelihoods so families can truly thrive. Because when life at home feels whole, wildlife stops being a threat, and starts becoming something worth protecting. Coexistence begins in the home. At the table. In the quality of life a family wakes up to every morning. Then we build the systems. The Ubuntu Coexistence, powered by Stand Up Shout Out is a network of strategic, community-led interventions designed to reduce conflict, increase tolerance, and strengthen coexistence across landscapes. Ubuntu Bomas, protecting homes and livestock from predators. Ubuntu Lights, solar-powered, non-harmful deterrents. Ubuntu Network, a women-led early warning system, built from the ground up and now growing from Athi Kapiti to Amboseli. Community-designed. Community-owned. Every single one. But it goes deeper than infrastructure. Coexistence looks like sitting with communities and co-creating solutions. Listening before building. It looks like training local leaders, not just as participants, but as trainers of trainers. Owners. Teachers. Changemakers. It looks like taking community members to learn, to see, to experience, and watching them come back home and pass that knowledge forward. Coexistence is not something we deliver. It’s something communities own. And then there’s the next generation. Our Gen Green Coexistence Warriors. Young people we are raising into this work early, before fear sets in, before resentment takes root. Children growing up knowing the elephant next door is a neighbour. Carrying this message into their homes, their schools, their friendships, their futures. Building a new relationship with wildlife, right now. This is what coexistence looks like when communities lead. Women who know the elephants by season and by name. Warriors who walk wildlife corridors before sunrise. Grandmothers who have read the land longer than any researcher. Children who understand that conservation is something they lead. We do not protect wildlife from people. We work with people to protect wildlife. That’s the difference. And that’s what makes it last. ✊🏽🌍 #SUSO

People thrive. Wildlife thrives. And the future becomes stronger for both. Because true conservation is about raising the custodians of tomorrow. This is the spirit of coexistence. This is the power of community. This is how lasting impact is built. #NextGenerationLeaders

Daring to dream is not easy. Overcoming obstacles is not easy. Building something meaningful rarely is. But when communities unite around a common goal, when youth are inspired, and when the next generation is prepared to lead, something powerful begins to happen.

Because real leadership does not choose one space. It shapes policy. It restores land. It mobilizes youth. It builds systems. And it still breaks bread. 13 years behind us. Stronger roots. Higher reach. And we move forward with greater energy. Ubuntu. Always. 🌍✨ #SUSO13

Then we planted 13 trees for 13 years. Not for photos. For recommitment. To restoration. To inclusion. To a nature-positive future we are building, deliberately. Because real leadership does not choose one space.
