To Enjoy Attacking, Focus On Defending.⬇️ If your team struggles to attack, look at your defense. It sounds counterintuitive. But defense and offense aren’t separate. They only exist together. / A big part of attacking is psychological. We want our players to be courageous. But courage also means to risk losing the ball. We want players positioned in front of the ball so we can play forward. But that means they’re not behind the ball when we lose it. Players need to feel safe to attack well. We need to trust in our abilities to defend. / When the offense isn’t working, coaches often focus on pass quality, first touch, positioning, etc. That's certainly part of it. But I propose to reverse this: Defense first, offense second. - How prepared are your players when you lose the ball? - How stable are they in 1v1 defending? - Is the goalkeeper ready to cover balls behind the line? - How strong is the impulse to counter-press? If this is stable, players feel safer. They’re more confident to attack. More likely to try things. More likely to play forward. / And it creates a cycle: If you trust your defense, you attack better. The better you attack, the more you disorganize the opponent. The more disorganized they are, the easier they are to defend (if you lose the ball). / So, when you have the ball, the first focus is: How do we protect our own goal?
