I started The Christmas Dinners in 2013. today up and down the country teams of dedicated volunteers are all preparing for Christmas Day. Self organised steering groups have been meeting fortnightly throughout winter. The aim? To organise a Christmas Dinner on Christmas Day for young care leavers between 18 and 25. By the power of community the teams organise 1. Up to fifty guests per diner 2. Individual transport for guests on Christmas Day (no coaches) 3. Presents (Individual presents for the named person) and wrapping on Christmas Eve (no second hand gifts) 4 .Volunteers for Christmas Day (all DBS Checked and trained) 6. Films and activities (PlayStation giant Jenga etc ) throughout Christmas Day in a Christmassy venue 7. A chef and food prep for Christmas Day meal (including nibbles on arrival and food throughout the evening) All the steering groups located resources from within their communities, thus raising awareness of care leavers at times like this. Waitrose provide every dinner with a hamper of delicious food and essentials for each guest to take away. No care leaver should feel alone over Christmas. Food is love. Thank you Waitrose. Thank you John Lewis. Thank you to all the incredible volunteers up and down the country. And thank you to Topë who inspired me to do this in 2012. What I learned this week while unwell and admitted to @NNUH: Our staff are, as ever, quietly outstanding. Compassion, steadiness, and kindness everywhere. I received thoughtful care from our spinal team, @TeamEAUS_NNUH , Gateley Ward, @nnuhvolunteers & @NNUHTheatres The support patients gave one another in the same bay made as much difference as any medicine. People with diabetes are consistently offered the right meal options thanks to @NNUHdietetics And on the surgical ward, diabetes awareness was excellent — self-insulin management was initiated for me by default, exactly as the policy intends. Thank you @NNUHpharmacy It was a hard week, but I left reminded of how much good work happens every day 💙
