Save the Children Scotland

All families in England, Wales and Scotland will be worried about the further impact on their budgets of the energy price cap rise. But for poorer families who spend a larger percentage of their income on energy bills, this will be particularly painful. We're calling on the UK Government to introduce a discounted tariff for low income families called a "social tariff". This would help those hit the hardest.

We're devastated by the reports that a missile strike on an apartment building in Kyiv has killed 24 people, including three children. Over 3,500 children have been killed or injured in Ukraine since the start of full-scale war over four years ago. Children are not part of this conflict, they’re caught in a cycle of violence they never chose. These horrors must not be normalised. Today we celebrate the life of our longest-serving volunteer, Terry Holt. Terry was born in 1923, only four years after Save the Children was founded. She recently passed away at age 102. Terry served in the Auxiliary Territorial Service between 1941 and 1948 and saw first-hand the fate of children growing up in conflict. After returning home, she founded the Cheadle and Gatley branch of Save the Children in 1953, and ran many activities and events over the years, raising a lot of money for children who need it. After seeing news coverage about Gaza, Terry felt the need to ‘do her bit’ for children there. So, for her 100th birthday, she held a mulled wine and mince pie coffee morning with the aim of raising £1,500, but ended up raising £3,000! Terry was a remarkable woman and leaves an incredible legacy. What a privilege to have had a lifetime of your support, Terry. Thank you. ❤️

In Sudan last month I spoke to survivors of the El Fasher siege. One story really stuck with me. I met Minahil*, a mother who was forced to flee the violence with her family. Tragically, her older son wasn't allowed to leave. He was one of 6,000 people killed. She is now living in a displacement camp with the rest of her family in River Nile State. Save the Children is doing what it can to support Minahil* and families like hers. But so much more needs to be done. Sudan’s children are suffering the most acute hunger and education crisis in the world right now. The UK Government and international partners need to step up in this hour of need. The Middle East conflict is taking a devastating toll on children. Forced to flee from their homes, they clutch toys and schoolbags, trying to hold onto small comforts as their world is uprooted. Schools have become shelters for displaced families, and playgrounds storage for humanitarian aid. No child should have to live through this. This war must stop, and children’s futures must be protected.

10 years on from the birth of ‘Kirsty’ the Holyrood baby, her story still holds up a mirror to the reality facing too many children across Scotland. As @Fee_King states: "More substantial actions are needed to have a credible route to meeting child poverty targets". 👇
