The Foreign Secretary @YvetteCooperMP has today announced how the UK Government plans to spend the overseas aid budget, which they slashed last year. While we welcome the focus on innovation and move to work more in partnership with countries, the Government's efforts to frame this as a positive story will ring hollow for all the children around the world losing access to lifesaving healthcare, education and protection.

At least 100 million children in countries directly impacted by the escalating violence in the Middle East and wider region are facing deepening fear, distress and the risk of physical harm and displacement. Nearly 200 children have been killed in the last five days, the equivalent to more than six classrooms full of children. This includes at least 181 children under the age of 10 in Iran, seven children in Lebanon, three children in Israel and one child in Kuwait. All children are now facing the terrifying prospect of an expansive war on a regional scale. We are urgently calling for an end to the hostilities to protect children from further harm. Until then, the laws of war must be followed. All parties must take urgent measures to protect civilians and civilian infrastructure. Children must be off limits.

In #Sudan, #hunger is deepening. This community kitchen in Omdurman feeds hundreds of displaced families each day. Fatima*, a mother of four, told me it is a lifeline for her children. Communities are stepping up. The world needs to urgently step up vital international support.

In #Sudan, #education is under attack. Half of school-aged children have lost more than a year of learning due to conflict. One of the longest school closures anywhere in the world. Across the country, schools have been damaged, occupied, or forced to close. For millions of children, the classroom has disappeared. And yet, education is one of the first priorities that parents and children talk about, because it offers hope, a future, respite and safety from life's daily challenges. In Port Sudan, I visited a primary school supported by Save the Children. The children studying here are local as well as those displaced by conflict. Through the school feeding programme, they receive at least one nutritious meal a day. For many families, that meal makes the difference between a child attending school or not. More than 11 million people in Sudan remain displaced. Sudan’s children - like yours, like mine - deserve a future.

S U D A N Over the coming days, I’ll be travelling across Sudan to see Save the Children @SC_inSudan work to support children affected by almost three years of conflict. I will be meeting with partners and visiting mobile health clinics, emergency response rooms, and schools - services that are vital to help children facing the most desperate circumstances. Last night, Russian strikes killed three young children – two one-year-old boys and one two-year-old girl – and one man in Ukraine. Families have also been turning to desperate measures to survive power blackouts following attacks on energy facilities, leaving them without heating and water in one of Ukraine’s coldest weeks this winter.
