SENTINEL CHICKENS ARE BACK 🐔 Dozens of chickens have been placed in coops across the County as Mosquito Control prepares for the rainy season. The chickens help detect whether mosquito-borne viruses may be present in an area. When exposed to viruses carried by mosquitoes, chickens develop antibodies without getting sick or spreading the virus. Weekly testing allows the Mosquito Control team to identify where disease-carrying mosquitoes may be active and focus treatment where it’s needed most. At the end of the rainy season, the chickens “retire” and are given to community members, including local farmers. Residents can also help reduce mosquito breeding by draining standing water around their homes and protect themselves from bites by using mosquito repellent.
