From @JonHaidt’s #anxiousgeneration to talk about phone bans, schools are looking ahead to the fall and how they want to approach student tech use and well-being. Check out our latest blog to discover what the "Wait Until 8th" movement is all about and how your school community can create a game plan to ease your students into tech while fostering positive, high-character decision-making. thesocialinstitute.com/blog/understan…

Relaxing is not the only way to recharge. Finding meaning is a source of fuel. A restorative break doesn't just avoid tasks that burn you out. It adds people and projects that fire you up. Detaching from stress prevents exhaustion. Attaching to purpose elevates energy. tinyurl.com/25b49zrr

Difficult conversations are rarely as unpleasant as we expect. 7 studies: we're too pessimistic about leveling with friends & partners. We fixate on what could go wrong, overlooking what might go right. Relationships stagnate in silence. Candor opens the door to growth.

A core skill of emotional intelligence is observing feelings before internalizing them. Emotions are messages from your past self to your present self. They're best interpreted by your future self. Feelings don't define who you are. They reveal what you value right now.

Urging people to be positive doesn’t boost their resilience. It denies their reality. When times are tough, we don’t need good vibes only. We need a hand to keep us steady through all the vibrations. Strength doesn’t come from forced smiles. It comes from feeling supported. link.chtbl.com/RTAdam

In your career, the most valuable currency is not how much you know. It's how well you learn. In a stable world, success depended on building expertise. In a changing world, it hinges on evolving expertise. Potential is no longer defined by ability. It's a function of agility.

Don't confuse psychological safety with "safe spaces." Safe spaces treat people as fragile and dissenting ideas as threats. Psychologically safe environments build the capacity to embrace and learn from respectful disagreement. Exposure to diverging views is fuel for growth.

I am absolutely convinced that a modern-day human potential movement must rest on a foundation of shared humanity and recognition that all humans have the same basic security needs (safety, connection, self-esteem) as well as growth needs (exploration, love, and purpose).

Compassion is kinder and healthier than empathy. Evidence: when we feel others’ pain, we often get overwhelmed and withdraw. When we feel concern for their pain, we reach out and help. The point of compassion isn't to share their feelings. It's to care about their feelings.

When we’re feeling burned out or having a tough time, we often become overly focused on reaching the light at the end of the metaphorical tunnel.

Once again we must share this resource as a result of tragedy. Our hearts are with those affected by the violence in Nashville. Schools should be safe from gun violence. These resources can be used when preparing to talk with students. bit.ly/3nGXtMA

Timed tests don’t measure what students know. They assess how students perform under stress. Data: tests under time pressure underestimate the abilities of girls—especially in math, where test anxiety is high. If students can't finish a test, make it shorter or give more time.
