The recording of “The Girl Is Mine” in 1982 by Michael Jackson and Paul McCartney was one of the most relaxed and joyful moments of Michael’s entire studio career, even compared to the sessions for the Thriller album, which was a very ambitious project.
Michael was only 24 years old and already a huge star, working with producer Quincy Jones at Westlake Studios in Los Angeles. Quincy had asked him for a lighthearted, playful song about two men having a friendly argument over a girl, something easy to listen to to open the album. Michael composed the entire melody, structure, keyboards, and strings spontaneously. He woke up in the middle of the night, sang everything he heard in his head directly into a tape recorder, and presented it to Quincy the next day.
The idea to call on Paul came about because Michael deeply admired the Beatles and wanted an authentic collaboration. They had already begun writing other songs together, such as “Say Say Say,” but “The Girl Is Mine” was recorded specifically for Thriller between April 14 and 16, 1982.
In the studio were Quincy Jones, George Martin (the legendary Beatles producer), Paul’s wife Linda McCartney, and several Toto musicians, including David Paich on piano, Jeff Porcaro on drums, and Steve Lukather on guitar. The sound engineer was Bruce Swedien.
Unlike many recordings today, Michael and Paul sang practically live, face to face in the same room, along with the backing track. They did not do separate overdubs. The atmosphere was pure fun: constant jokes, laughter, ideas being tossed back and forth, and a very natural vibe.
Michael always remembered those sessions as one of the happiest moments of his solo career. He said they simply had a lot of fun and recorded the vocals almost at the same time as the instrumental track. The spoken dialogue at the end of the song (“Michael, we’re not going to fight about this, okay?” and “Paul, I think I told you, I’m a lover, not a fighter”) came directly from the jokes they were making in the studio, and they left it in because it captured their real chemistry.
Michael sang standing on a special platform that Swedien used to better capture his movements and rhythmic energy. His lead vocals are warm and controlled in the verses, with soft and precise falsettos in the choruses, showcasing his ability to blend tenderness and groove. The harmonies with Paul flowed very naturally: Paul’s more rock-oriented, nasal voice perfectly complemented Michael’s silky timbre.
The song turned out to be a smooth pop duet with a prominent bass line, piano, and light arrangements, very different from the more explosive, funky sound of the rest of Thriller.
It was released as the first single in October 1982 and reached number 2 on the Billboard charts. Although some critics found it too soft, it served its purpose of presenting Michael as a mature artist capable of collaborating with legends. Those three days in the studio marked the high point of his friendship with Paul, before it cooled off years later due to business issues such as the purchase of the Beatles’ catalog.

A big snake showed up, and this cat didn’t run.
She stood her ground.
Not because she’s stronger.
Not because she’s fearless.
But because her babies were behind her.
In that moment, it wasn’t about survival anymore, it was about protection.
That’s what motherhood looks like.
No training. No backup.
Just instinct and sacrifice.
Mothers don’t wait to be ready.
They become whatever they need to be.
And that’s a kind of strength you can’t teach.
