Melbourne’s end-of-summer water storage levels were at their lowest since 2020. With dry conditions continuing, the Minister for Water has ordered 150 billion litres of desalinated water for 2026–27.

The order will help keep water flowing to homes and businesses, making sure there’s enough for everyone as demand grows and conditions stay dry. While desalination plays an important role in our water future, we all have a part to play.

UPDATE: Tuesday 7 April 2026. Good news – water quality test results confirm it’s safe to resume normal activities at Shire Hall Beach, Mills Beach and Tanti Creek in Mornington. Thanks for your patience while we completed clean-up works and waited on results.

🚨 UPDATE 2 April - We’ve had a sewer spill at Tanti Ave, Mornington. Recent water quality sampling near the mouth of Tanti Creek indicates poor water quality. Avoid the signed areas at Shire Hall Beach and Mills Beach and avoid handling water in Tanti Creek until further notice.

UPDATE 27 March: Thanks for your patience, Albert Park. Emergency sewer works continue near Kerferd Rd and Danks St. We’re sorry it’s taking longer than usual and for the ongoing disruption.

We’ll continue to keep the noise and traffic to a minimum and leave the area as we found it. For more information, customers can call our 24/7 Faults and Emergencies team on 13 28 12.

Because of challenging ground conditions and the 7.5-metre pipe depth, we’ve needed specialised equipment to make sure we undertake the works safely. Don’t worry – there’s still no impact to the water supply and sewer network.

Your water may seem different when it first comes out of the tap. If it’s white or cloudy, this is due to air in the pipes. The sediment that was stirred up may even me making it a little brown. It should clear up quickly after flushing, but if not call us on 13 28 12.
