This week Lethy, Ifor, and Graham are attending the Spring Meeting of @Materials_MRS in Seattle. Ifor presented work on electrically driven lasers, whilst Graham showed how nanoimprinting can control lasers and sensing, and Lethy organised a symposium. #S25MRS

The OSC was delighted to have former OSC member Dr Andrew Matheson visit yesterday. At the photonics seminar he spoke about his current work at the developing a novel optical sensing system for atmospheric nitrogen dioxide called SNEEZI.

Last week final year project students of the School of Physics and Astronomy presented posters about their work. Pictured is Angus Johnson who is currently completing a project studying materials for underwater organic solar cells, supervised by Prof Ifor Samuel.

Yesterday members of the OSC had the opportunity to listen to and meet 2021 Nobel Prize winner Prof. Sir David MacMillan. Prof MacMillan gave the Irvine Memorial Lecture and spoke about his life and his work on Asymmetric Organocatalysis for which he won his Nobel Prize.

At the recent St Andrews Summit 2025 on geopolitics of emerging technologies, Ifor was part of a panel discussing energy security, together with colleagues Profs Adrian Finch (Geology) and Venkataraman Thangadurai (Chemistry).

We are very proud to announce that yesterday Dr David Webster completed his PhD viva! Well done Dr Webster!

Congratulations to Ifor on his acceptance to the Scottish Science Advisory Council. Along with other senior academics he will be part of a panel of experts who supporting the Chief Scientific Adviser for Scotland.

Yesterday Hassan, Ifor, and Graham visited The Scottish Parliament to attended Scotland's Critical Technologies Supercluster event. Here, they met with other representatives of Scotland's research and innovation, and listened to Richard Lochhead, Minister for Business.

We are very pleased to have Abdur Anwar from the @HumarLab visit us as part of his research on edible photonic barcodes for food tagging and tracing with @tra_food. During his stay he will be working with Prof Graham Turnbull.

Yesterday the OSC, Centre of Biophotonics, and School of Physics and Astronomy were very pleased to host Prof Laura M. Lechuga of the Catalan Institute of Nanoscience and Nanotechnology. She gave an exciting colloquium about her work developing photonic biosensors for medical.
