Today we honor the Battle of Homestead. In 1892, steelworkers in Homestead, Pa., stood up to Andrew Carnegie’s company, which tried to crush their union. When armed Pinkertons arrived, workers & the community fought back in one of the most defining labor battles in U.S. history.

Join us in welcoming our newest siblings! About 140 workers at Big River Forest Products, a sawmill in Mississippi, voted to join our union, becoming the latest work force in the South to unionize in the fight for better working conditions and stronger communities.

While in Pittsburgh, it will also stop at sites honoring working people, including the Carrie Blast Furnace, once part of U.S. Steel’s Homestead Works.

Before arriving here, the flag traveled to 26 overseas U.S. military cemeteries, 10 countries, and every U.S. state and territory—on its way to Washington, D.C., for July 4.

We were proud to host a historic U.S. flag at our Pittsburgh headquarters today, as part of the National Flag Foundation’s “Flag Sojourn 250.”
