Kenya isn’t safe until all women are safe. #EndFemicideKE In 2013, 16-year-old Liz was walking home from her grandfather’s funeral when she was ambushed by six men. They raped her and then threw her unconscious body down a 6-metre toilet pit. Their punishment? Police had them mow their station lawn, then let them go free!  A protest was organised to protest that injustice. I picked my 4-year-old daughter up early from school, and together we marched for Liz. We demanded the immediate arrest and prosecution of her accused rapists and laid negligence charges on the police. On April 11 2015, the three accused were convicted on both counts and jailed for 15 years. On Saturday, 27th January 2024, my now 13-year-old daughter, my wife, and our two sons shall join the protest against femicide. 8 women have been brutally murdered in the last three weeks. That’s the number we know, and it is more likely than not that it is much higher. This is an injustice that we must address. Over 40% of married women in Kenya have reported being victims of either domestic violence or sexual abuse. In 2022 Nairobi Metropolitan Service released a report that said that 15 women are raped in Nairobi every day. That’s one county. According to government statistics at least 40 women are raped every day; some get pregnant, and others get sexually transmitted diseases including HIV-AIDS. They all live with the scars and trauma. These statistics are scary. Criminals get deterred by law enforcement, and jail sentences. But more importantly by us, as a society. We make the rules, and our women must be safe, always. #TotalShutDownKE will force the government to act on violence against women. Join us on Saturday. Here is a website that has historical and current data on femicide in Kenya. femicide.africauncensored.online #HandsOffMyBody
