SEASON OPENER
𝐘𝐚𝐧𝐤𝐞𝐞𝐬/𝐆𝐢𝐚𝐧𝐭𝐬:
I don't want to overanalyze anything here, but I do like a couple of things.
First off, Logan Webb is about as warm as an Ace can be coming into this season. Not only has he had a chance to experiment and loosen up a bit in Spring Training, but this time around also got to pitch in important games in the WBC. Going up against a pretty respectable lineup of MLB hitters for team Canada in the first round of the tournament, we can say that it was a proper challenge that he was able to fully handle. If he does have a stinker for whatever reason, it won't be because of rust or needing to "get adjusted to meaningful games".
On the other end, we have Max Fried, who may not have seen much action, but certainly used the Spring Training to get that arm loose. Fried had also move away from using the four seamer in high percentages by the start of last season, and appears to be focusing on breaking balls again in the March samples we have seen so far. What does this mean really? I don't know, but at least any question of how he comes in today would be more about practice challenges rather than the concern of having a cold arm that may take awhile to fully get into full velocity and command, which he would have far less control over if that were the case. Seeing such success last season through his new looser-style pitching approach, as well as a 3-session Spring Training this year that was far from bad, I think he is ready to go. I would imagine he was reserving his best efforts for games that count.
With both teams playing just 3 games in the first 5 days of the season, I don't think either skipper is going to be shy in using whatever relievers are needed to keep the runs from coming. With mild San Fran weather at sea level also being the case, I think we may have the making for a less eventful season opener.
Some books have it at 6.5. That works too, although I would prefer 7 on Opening Day.
