As part of the Sumanasa Grants project, Shehzor has worked with her band Inshallah Babes on the composition and recording of an experimental punk album of 11 tracks. The songs of this album take inspiration from Sufi poetry, queer and anti-caste literature, and revolutionary Lokgeet. Inshallah Babes will be presenting a selection of songs from their upcoming album at Arts Unfettered 2026.

I knew Aravindan for over a decade. First, when he was with The Hindu (Tamil) and later when we worked very closely in the translation of three of my books. Aravindan was a rare human being, kind and deeply thoughtful. We spent hours together thinking together and debating many subjects. The conversation would begin with an idea in the book and then veer off more often than not to philosophical and existential questions. His attention to detail and his ability get to the most subtle understanding of anything and find the right word for its expression was remarkable. He did all this with a smile, never flaunting his own knowledge or vast reading. The last time we met, we just laughed about a few things!
He did not entirely agree with my critique of the philosopher J Krishnamurti published in The India Forum and had said he would translate and publish it along with his own commentary. I was looking forward to that engagement. That is going to remain unfinished!
It is very difficult to accept the fact that he is no more with us.

Pakshikoodu can be interpreted both as a bird nest or a bird cage. The imagery pulls on the strings of growing up with casteist trauma and generational trauma that is rooted in ancestral displacement, assimilation and exploitation. The oppression, truly, begins then, at home.
Many new generations of DBA folk exist in tandem with upper caste realities. One occupies space in these environments being made fully aware of one’s difference from the rest. Growing up in a Brahmin neighbourhood, ostracised in conservative and upper caste schools and having become an adult who is exoticised/ fetishised within an urban ecosystem that is predominantly upper caste Hindu, has made me feel like an eternal outcast. Themes about isolation around this experience develop into my art in this work.
This work emerges from the processing of generational trauma, woes of displacement and feelings of un-belonging.

This project tries to trace the fragile forests of Suri as they vanish under urban expansion and greenery decline. Through diaries, sketches, paintings, photographs and video, I record the atmosphere of change and the silence left behind. It is both a memory of what is disappearing and a visual call to honor what remains.

"Whether he is loved, eulogised, hated or decried, the fact that Ambedkar is a consciousness gives us the strength that we are still a vibrant society. The moment he disappears from our midst we become truth-less," ✍️ @tmkrishna in this column from 2016.
