Tagore had no truck with the ugly Western construct of nationalism as aligned to a nation-state.
His nationalism sought love and understanding, not just among Indians but between all human beings, such that borders become immaterial.

Presenting Edition 3 of the Classroom Series
Over the past few years, I have conducted two day workshops where I teach serious Karnatik musicians rare and complex compositions. I strongly believe that these compositions must be learnt directly from a teacher. In the class we learn slowly, repeat each line numerous times and allow room for clarifications and questions. This is a Karnatik intensive!
In this edition, I will be teaching two compositions LIVE - devi ni pada sarasamule dikku - kambhoji - adi by Shyama Shastri and devi sri tulasamma - mayamalavagowla - adi by Tyagaraja. Participants can join online from anywhere in the world or attend in person in Chennai (limited seats available).

Beyond the chest-thumping, India’s national anthem was born as a radical song of protest.
Reclaiming it today means confronting both majoritarian politics and Tagore’s own historic battle against the ‘cult’ of forced conformity.

"Jana Gana Mana is not a haughty chest-thumping song about India and Indians. It is a reflective composition that calls for pause, thought, action and imagination."

"If Tagore had been alive today, he would have stood tall and rendered Jana Gana Mana and Amar Shonar Bangla as songs that belong to humankind, and not as the national anthems of India and Bangladesh respectively."
