@adam_menszer @seconds_0 Energy? It’s massively more energy intensive to ship things by truck than by boat. Our rail networks are already maxed out and we aren’t building more due to land use restrictions. And only a few commodities can be shipped by pipeline

@seconds_0 I keep hearing about the Jones act, however isn't rail/trucking/pipelines vastly better in the US? I'm not sure I see the value in repealing part or all of the Jones act. I read your post, but I can't make the math work.

The Jones Act has 4 requirements: Vessels must be U.S. built. Vessels must be U.S. owned. Vessels must be U.S. crewed. Vessels must be U.S. flagged. The crippling part of the Jones Act is that U.S.-built U.S. shipyards, for a variety of reasons, are incredibly inefficient. We don't have that many of them, and they cost about five times what a ship from South Korea would cost. As a person who actually believes in trade, I fully would love for South Korea to become our US shipyard. We just buy ships from them because they're good at making them. Coastal water transport in the U.S. could be 60% cheaper. Because of the Jones Act, it's actually cheaper to ship goods from the U.S. to a foreign country and back to the U.S. than between two ports, which is completely bonkers insane! As a byproduct, we have killed all of the growth within the Mississippi, which should be the most powerful inland economic advantage in the world. Maintaining the requirement of U.S.-owned, U.S.-crewed, and U.S.-flagged is perfectly fine and in line with my general national security concerns, but U.S.-built has destroyed our shipping industry. There's tens of billions of GDP lying on the table here, and a direct step in reducing our dependency on foreign suppliers. It's also how you kickstart rebuilding an American shipyard industry. If you 10x the number of U.S. ships working in ports, you start building all of the maintenance businesses at U.S. ports, and the demand increases. The U.S. bill requirement of the Jones Act is horrifically destructive to America and, in particular, horrifically destructive to middle America, and it should be destroyed.

@VirilityMaxxed @GBBranstetter The 2001 and 2002 AUMFs did not provide the President carte blanche to invade anyone they want. The 2002 AUMF applied to Iraq (and has been repealed) and the 2001 AUMF only applies to forces affiliated with al Qaeda (such as the Taliban)

War Powers Act and AUMF of 2001 have changed things. See Biden, Obama and Bush admin. All continued or started new “wars” without declarations of war. For a fair treatment: “the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed.” Obviously we have laws in place for background checks and certain restrictions on who can purchase what.

I don’t understand. This stuff is real, it exists, you can actually buy it, and yet the VR market is almost dead. What happened to the kids in the 90s who dreamed about this possibility? Why do modern kids now go crazy for games where you don’t really do anything, where at most you just swipe up and down, or spend their time screaming in stupid games that require no concentration, like amoebas with no curiosity? This stuff finally f***ing exists, and yet the videogame market pretends it’s invisible. F***! F***! F***! In 1998, when we were 13 playing Resident Evil 2 on the PlayStation with my friends, we would have killed to be able to play something like this. One big thing about tonight's ruling regarding trans kids-- even if you read the dissent, it's fairly clear that the parents were eventually going to win on the merits, and very possibly 9-0. There's no dissent arguing "actually California should be able to do this".

I was gaslit about this. They all said "no, we only use 'face card' as a metaphor for a credit card and your face gets you (or doesn't get you) stuff, especially in the phrase 'face card declined' or similar." This was simply a lie. I was right. They use "face card" for "face."

Obviously this is bad faith but even in good faith these comparisons always irritate me. Superficially and theoretically, yes, there’s a choice between guns and butter. But in reality, that’s not the choice at all. The reason we haven’t fixed LA homeless has absolutely nothing to do with anything foreign-policy related. It’s a choice. We spend gazillions of dollars (much more than on our military) “at home”. The problem isn’t that we don’t spend enough on butter because we buy too many guys. It’s that our butter spending is retarded and counterproductive at best, actively pernicious at worst. There are a ton of programs that we pay for that are so damaging, I’d literally rather light the dollars on fire on the White House lawn.
