@TimothyEveland People have expectations about the past being rough and gritty. Which it was, but not in the shallow aesthetic way that hollywood depicts it.

Close, but that doesn't quite explain why media is stuck showing crappy medieval armor. I'll try to articulate it though. If it was because of their preference to what looks cool then the vast majority of medieval filmmakers would have horrible taste, and let's be fair that's not true because they're the ones making millions in the film industry. The real reason for media showing drab medieval aesthetics is actually much sadder. They got a lot right in the '50s, then beginning around the '80s it was actually an ignorant and ironic desire for REALISM that led to ugly biker leather and metal studs everywhere. They thought the grim, dirty vibes looked more REAL, lol. Today, they still follow this ignorant aesthetic not because it's realistic but because the poor, colorless, and muddy vibes is what consumers have actually been brainwashed to EXPECT when they think of "medieval", and so filmmakers want to satisfy consumers by continuing to show them what they expect. It's sad, right?! There's hope though! In fact, this is exactly why spreading awareness is such important work, because once over 50% of movie consumers know how silly Hollywood armor looks then filmmakers will be forced to adjust to meet new consumer expectations. So keep spreading awareness, folks!

@JohnnyReno @pureMetatron That's NOT what Buddha says, for the record. I'm a Christian not a Buddhist but you've probably insulted Buddhism more than any of the other religions with that statement. You are describing western slackerism, not Buddhism.

It's hard to resist insanity when you're raised to be insane. The three major religions on Earth are the Jews, where God kills everybody, Christians, where your God was slaughtered so that his blood saved you, or Muslim, where you are told to kill anybody who doesn't believe, women are cattle and your reward is to rape 72 virgins when you die. The only real God might be Buddha, where you sit back and smoke a joint and relax...🤔🤷

I was corrected on my phrasing. Because of the influence of Western films and so on, it feels more accurate to say that we Japanese tend to see the heartland of the continent — especially west of the Mississippi River — as “typical America.” That being said, thanks to the internet, we’ve been learning the real recipes of authentic Southern-style BBQ over the past two decades. A lot of people rate it as one of the most delicious ways to eat meat in the world, and restaurants that spotlight Southern-style BBQ are steadily popping up in Japan too.
