Tech talk: I made a cool sound for the chorus that sounds like a harmonium by sampling some piano chords, cutting of the attack of the note then assigning them to playing the chords via midi. #timstwitterlisteningparty
Every time I pass the flat I’m filled with great memories from another time, feels like another world. After I wrote the song I found out that my friend Antonio whose flat it was had died from Covid. I was devastated and it’s totally changed the song #timstwitterlisteningparty
SPANISH FLAT
I wanted to write a really simple song about something small. My early days of moving to London, no responsibilities, just hedonism. I’d often go with my friend Sergio to ‘the Spanish flat’ where a bunch of our Spanish friends lived. #timstwitterlisteningparty
The lyric about the tiger is do with the flight/flight response thing… how we are genetically programmed to react to threats that no longer exist (like tigers) so we freak out about other stuff. #timstwitterlisteningparty
There was a lot of little experimental stuff like that on this record that I really enjoyed, even if it doesn’t exactly sound like an experimental album… it’s all about the process. #timstwitterlisteningparty
TOM QUIXOTE
Lots of people asked me what the instrument was that plays a little solo at the beginning. Its just my mouth/vocal, sampled and played on the keyboard. I really loved it, sounded like a weird trumpet. #timstwitterlisteningparty
I kind of wrote it as a note to my daughter, who I was imagining giving some life advice to. But it’s equally a note to myself. Kind of saying get over it, pull yourself together! #timstwitterlisteningparty
I’m actually really proud of this song from a technical point of view… and also that I managed to say something meaningful. ; ) #timstwitterlisteningparty
LITTLE HUMAN
Some songs just take bloody ages to come together and this was one of them! I did many re-writes until I came with an arrangement and lyric that I was happy with #timstwitterlisteningparty
I really like to play this live (only done a couple of streaming shows) but this song stands up just fine on its own with only me and a guitar. #timstwitterlisteningparty
Big shout to Marco Spaggiari who mixed this and some of the other tracks on the record. I think he did a great job. I never met him but hope to one day. #timstwitterlisteningparty
DISTANT LIGHT
Being a lockdown record - maybe it’s subconscious but some of the themes tend to be about emerging from bleakness into something better, more colourful. This is definitely one of those #timstwitterlisteningparty
I think this song has the same chord cycle throughout - very unusual for me! I’m pre-programmed to change chords in the chorus… something I’m trying to stop doing for the sake of it. #timstwitterlisteningparty
In my head, this was originally a really upbeat song, kind of like an American rock vibe. Something Springsteen-esque. Then it felt a bit out of place so I turned it on it’s head and it came out like this. #timstwitterlisteningparty
