The Cadenza project on music processing and hearing loss is in the IEEE Inside Signal Processing Newsletter. signalprocessingsociety.org/newsletter/202… This is because our latest machine learning challenge is being kindly supported by @IEEEorg SPS and means we have cash prizes.

There are two tasks 1. Improving the intelligibility of lyrics for pop/rock music while not harming audio quality. 2. Rebalancing the level of instruments within a classical music ensemble (e.g. string quartet) to allow personalised mixes. 2/2 cadenzachallenge.org

This is for a task about improving lyric intelligibility, something that people with a hearing loss say they want from music. The challenge formally launches tomorrow but the website is ready now if you want a sneak preview cadenzachallenge.org 2/2

CAD2 Machine Learning challenges to improve music for those with hearing loss. We've been developing a metric to measure lyric intelligibility. It uses the pyClarity hearing loss model + Whisper ASR. Graph is words correct. x: listener scores. y:new metric. 1/2

My Hay Festival appearance on Sliced Bread is now out on Radio 4. The wonder product being investigated is the newer-style ear plugs that have become popular. bbc.co.uk/sounds/play/m0…

I've never quoted the Daily Star before but this sums it up for me. Don't assume it is in the bag. I remember 1992. Take your ID and vote tacticalvote.co.uk Normal non-political stuff will resume tomorrow.

Got any good examples for singers who illustrate the extremes of lyric intelligibility? Would be nice to have some examples when we launch this machine learning challenge soon.

In prep for our CAD2 challenge launching in 2 weeks 😬 we've been working with a focus group of people with hearing loss to define Lyric Intelligibility "Lyric intelligibility refers to how clearly and effortlessly the words in the music can be heard." 1/3

A great chance to join our lively group of PhDs on a really important topic. There are three suggested subjects: neighbour noise, environmental noise and new sound sources. Having DEFRA involved will mean your research could have real impact on noise.
Trevor Cox@trevor_cox

Want to research into reducing the harms caused by noise? Fully funded PhD working with Defra at @SalfordAcoustic . Start Sept 24 or Jan 25. findaphd.com/phds/project/p… You'll also join the CDT in Sustainable Sound Futures when that starts in Oct 25.

@audialsense Great, I've now found it. Includes gems such as "As a matter of general principle brass music is bad for building materials. That is why one side of opera houses is always poorer acoustically."

There's an old quote from auditorium acoustics I'm trying to trace. Can you help? The essence is certain groups playing in a classical hall will infect the walls it will never sound the same again. My vague memory is this was about military or brass bands.
