10 years ago today, I arrived Canada from Nigeria & life hasn’t been the same since then. To those planning on travelling abroad this year or in the near future, come closer because things aren’t what they used to be. Here are 10 key lessons I have learnt over the years abroad.

Agreed, "Toronto and Dating" shouldn't be in the same sentence 😂 Although, truth is, dating in Toronto is harder than we all admit. Even especially as an immigrant. Not because people are bad o, it's just because everything is actually layered in this city. Let me explain. Toronto moves fast. That's the thing. Someone told me dating in a place like Halifax or Ottawa feels different. Slower pace, tighter communities, people who actually have time to get to know you. Toronto is a city of arrivals and survivals. For a city like this, just like New York, love will usually compete with survival. Everyone is building. Everyone is busy. Everyone is figuring it out. Which makes real connection harder to hold onto. For many newcomers in this city, you are thinking about PR, stability, how expensive the city is, job security, your next move, etc. Plus, there's this pressure to figure it out fast in a city like this. But you and I know relationships don't perform well under pressure. They will just succumb and fail. Hence, "you can't find love in Toronto". More importantly, dating while you're mid-becoming is one of the harder things nobody talks about. It asks more of you. More patience, more clarity, more knowing what you actually want before you go looking for it. We also need to understand the big city problem is universal and not just unique to Toronto. Cities like New York, London, Lagos, Vancouver, San Francisco, Los Angeles, Tokyo, and Hong Kong all face the same core dating problems. So my brothers and my sisters in Toronto, you are not a terrible person who is unable to find or hold onto love in Toronto. You just need to understand, honestly, the city isn't broken. It's just what happens when you put transient people in one place and tell them to figure it out.

85% done. Finally submitted my final research paper on how municipalities shape Canadian immigration policy. Months of work. Worth it. One more semester. Finish line in sight. God’s grace abounds.
