Alvaro Lario@IFADPresident·
The UN Water community is meeting in Rome this week. As Chair of @UN_Water, I see how water underpins the systems that shape our world, from food production and energy to public health, economic growth and environmental resilience. This year’s #WorldWaterDay theme is “Where water flows, equality grows” and it reminds us that water security is also a powerful driver of equity. #Water is a systemic issue. It shapes food systems, climate resilience and economic stability, yet nearly half of the global population already lives under moderate to severe water stress. At @IFAD we see that investments in water deliver measurable impact: •In Bangladesh, climate-resilient infrastructure enabled farmers to maintain market access, increasing incomes by 70% even during the monsoon •In Egypt, solar-powered irrigation increased water availability and boosted crop productivity by 30% These are not just water solutions, they are investments in resilience, productivity and stability. But water also tests our ability to work together. With nearly 60% of freshwater flowing across borders, effective water management depends on cooperation. Where governance is coordinated, societies are more resilient. Where it is fragmented, risks cascade across food, energy and economic systems. As we look ahead to the 2026 UN Water Conference, we have a critical opportunity to strengthen coordination, mobilize financing and accelerate country-led solutions.
