George Washington was sworn in as the nation's first president #OTD 1789, on the balcony of Federal Hall in New York. 🇺🇸 These #CoxCorridor murals at the U.S. Capitol show the scene and the building. #America250

The #CoxCorridors of the #USCapitol's House wing are elaborately decorated with wall & ceiling murals incl. historical scenes, portraits & maps related to the development of the U.S. Nearby, the Hall of Columns houses part of the #NSHCollection of statuary donated by the states.

Tulip trees were the second most frequently planted tree in the U.S. Capitol Grounds landscape by Frederick Law Olmsted. Their long straight trunks and fast growth created a dramatic architectural element in framing the view of the building. #WLAM

In April 1864, Rep. Justin Morrill introduced legislation to convert the old House chamber into a "National Statuary Hall," saving the historic room by giving it a new function. The statue collection now on display throughout the #USCapitol spans 150+ yrs of American sculpture.
