Alum in Action | Violette de la Selle is an architect, critic at Yale School of Architecture, and a founding member of Citygroup, a New York City–based architecture collective and project space devoted to questioning the structures that shape architectural practice. Organized as a non-hierarchical group with no principal architects or directors, Citygroup is a platform for critical discourse, research, exhibitions, and public exchange, including Dialogue Not Monologue, an ongoing debate series that challenges disciplinary norms and expands conversations about architectural agency. Citygroup’s work has been recognized with a League Prize from The Architectural League of New York, inclusion in AIA New York’s New Practices New York, and multiple Graham Foundation grants.

Episode 5 of Open Door takes us to UVA's Morven Sustainability Lab, a 2,913-acre historic landscape just beyond central Grounds. There, we meet Elizabeth K. Meyer—Merrill D. Peterson Professor of Landscape Architecture and Morven's first faculty director—to explore Morven's layered histories, ancestral lands, and living archives. From an 1801 land survey commissioned by Thomas Jefferson to more than 100 years of farm journals, this episode examines how geology, land use, and memory shape place-based sustainability. Assistant Professor of Architecture JT Bachman’s recent research explores the collection, reprocessing, and transformation of discarded materials into long-lasting objects and building material prototypes. His ongoing project titled Waste Not, Want Not serves as a first step toward a larger effort centered around the creative reimagining and repurposing of “waste.” He and his students recently collaborated with UVA’s Decarbonization Academy and JunkLabz to investigate plastic waste from laboratories on campus — developing processes for sorting, shredding, and reprocessing the plastic material into new products. Decarbonization Academy Fellows and Student Research Team: Isabel Hamilton, Matthew Rusten, and Zihan (Annie) Zhao. JunkLabz co-founders: Zach Landsman and Elly Zarzyski. With support from UVA Office of Sustainability. Watch Here: youtu.be/h-1i4lf3MxA?si…

The University of Virginia has launched a new set of Research Hubs designed to bring together faculty across disciplines and strengthen collaboration around some of the most promising areas of research at UVA. One of the fifteen hubs includes a collaboration between architecture, psychology and education to examine how designed spaces and emerging technologies can strengthen human development and advance holistic approaches to well-being. The hub, Designing Development: Environments, Intelligence, and Learning, is co-chaired by Katie Stranix(Architecture), Mariana Teles (Psychology), and Amanda Williford (Early Childhood Education). The Jefferson Scholars Foundation recently honored five University of Virginia faculty members with awards recognizing their innovative approaches and classroom excellence. Each faculty member received $5,000 from the foundation. The foundation presented the awards in two categories earlier this month: The Award for Excellence in Teaching and the Hartfield Excellence in Teaching Award. The School of Architecture's Professor Suzanne Moomaw was recognized with this notable honor for her demonstrated "excellence in teaching and exceeding care for [her] students." The award honors those educators that go above and beyond in fulfilling the academic mission. Award recipients are welcomed into the Jefferson Scholars community as Faculty Fellows.
