Last week, I had the pure joy of hosting John Kiriakou here in Nicosia for almost an entire week. 🇨🇾 Over the next several days, I’ll be sharing ONE POST PER DAY so you can follow the unforgettable experience he had exploring Cyprus - its history, mountains, food, people, occupation, faith, and stories. Getting to know John up close and spending so much time together, my family and I no longer see him as just a close friend - we genuinely consider him PART OF OUR FAMILY now. And in a beautiful twist none of us expected… his recent DNA test revealed something that surprised him, but delighted all of us: he is apparently MORE CYPRIOT THAN ANYTHING ELSE. 🇨🇾 It’s something he now plans to explore further with a genealogist in the coming months. So let’s begin. 📍 DAY 1 - Arrival in Cyprus First stop: Traditional SOUVLAKIA & SHEFTALIA dinner in the old quarter of Strovolos. And yes… Cyprus immediately PASSED THE FOOD TEST.

He is - he’s an American national. But he also holds Greek citizenship, which was granted to him by the Greek government shortly before he was put in prison. You’ll have to listen to Part 2 of my interview with him, where he explains the full story - including the fascinating results of his DNA test, which showed him as being more Cypriot IN ORIGIN than anything else. 📍 DAY 4 - John Kiriakou & Cyprus’ Historical Trauma 🇨🇾 The morning began at Panagia Faneromeni Church in historic Old Nicosia, where Father Charalambos Zoumos explained the church’s central role during the 1821 GREEK WAR OF INDEPENDENCE period under Ottoman rule. Behind the church stands the mausoleum containing the remains of ARCHBISHOP KYPRIANOS and Cyprus’ senior bishops - executed alongside approximately 470 GREEK-CYPRIOT CLERGY AND COMMUNITY LEADERS by Ottoman authorities on JULY 9, 1821. The massacres later spread island-wide, with historical estimates placing the total death toll at over 2,000 GREEK CYPRIOTS - one of the most traumatic chapters in Cyprus’ modern history. Later in the day, John crossed into occupied Nicosia to visit: • The medieval ST. 📍 DAY 2 - John Kiriakou in Medieval Cyprus 🇨🇾 Venetian walls. Byzantine monasteries nearly 1,000 years old. Mountain villages suspended in time. The day began at the STATUE OF LIBERTY commemorating Cyprus’ independence from British colonial rule, followed by the magnificent VENETIAN WALLS OF NICOSIA constructed between 1567–1570. We then headed into the TROODOS MOUNTAINS for lunch in Prodromos - Cyprus’ HIGHEST-ALTITUDE village at 4,500 ft. Proper mountain food was mandatory: • souvla • lamb liver • pourgouri • makarónia tou fournou 😄 Later, we visited the extraordinary Agios Ioannis Lampadistis Monastery - a UNESCO World Heritage Byzantine monastery complex dating back roughly 1,000 years, famous for some of the finest surviving 11th–16th century Byzantine frescoes in the Eastern Mediterranean and for its remarkable TRIPLE-CHURCH STRUCTURE built beneath a single wooden roof. The monastery sits in the beautiful mountain village of Kalopanayiotis - established in the 11th cent. & one of the island’s most beautifully preserved traditional communities. The day ended drinking Cyprus coffee, reading pages from John’s book, and laughing our hearts out to his stories.

📍 DAY 3 - John Kiriakou Above Occupied Nicosia 🇨🇾 John met with H.E. Charalambos Prountzos, Mayor of Nicosia, for an insightful discussion about the city and its future. We were then given a remarkable rooftop tour overlooking HISTORIC OLD NICOSIA - one of the OLDEST CONTINUOUSLY INHABITED CITIES ON EARTH. From above, the scale of the VENETIAN WALLS becomes truly breathtaking… including the vast section of the capital that still remains under TURKISH MILITARY OCCUPATION following the 1974 invasion of Cyprus. One of the most extraordinary details? The City Council chamber itself is an all-glass structure encircled by ANCIENT RUINS uncovered during construction - history literally beneath their feet. @JohnKiriakou Hmm, you deserve all good things man but from my side when I sort by 'most popular' under this channel's video page, this interview is already high on the list for this respective channel's content. That said, I believe this entire channel is unjustly throttled.

For whatever reason, this interview is getting suppressed and in ALL HONESTY, it ticked a lot of new boxes for me. For the first time, I was interviewed LIVE from CYPRUS 🇨🇾 at the heart of the Eastern Mediterranean. @unfiltered__sam brought a regional perspective shaped by growing up between Cyprus & Lebanon offering angles and context that understandably aren’t usually explored in Western interviews. This was reflected in a number of questions that were genuinely NEW to me. I know you’ll enjoy listening to this one & can help give it the push it deserves.
