North West Media was established in 2007, to act as a creative hub for all disciplines of youth culture from breakdancers to graffiti artists, DJ's, and M.C.'s and to operate a radio station to provide an accessible platform for young people to express themselves, and provide them with the skills to pursue a career in the creative industries.
This Summer with massive thanks to Form Property & @Spinningfields 🙏 the vision of the organisation continues to be understood, as the world catches up, and witnesses the impact of Hip Hop and the influence, inclusion, diversity, creativity and opportunities that a culture created by Black and Hispanic youths in the Bronx, has provided the world! 💯 🖤 cemented in our city, on the culture's 50th anniversary by Manchester Hip Hop Archive delivering a FREE exhibition celebrating 50 years of Hip Hop, on New Quay Street, Manchester City Centre championing Hip Hop music, art, fashion and dance!
The exhibition, which popped up in a matter of weeks with thanks to our archive @MancLibraries , successfully welcomed over 2,000 people who attended to share beautiful memories, explored the unique and exclusive music, fashion, graffiti, breaking, and pirate radio displays, and contributed significant items ( inspired by the displays )which continues to build a broader picture and understanding of the hyper-local community and Hip Hop impact that the culture created. @HeritageFundUK 😊
Huge thank you to Claudia, Alex, and Mike, as well as all the staff team, supporters, visitors and industry that made it all possible. Alongside the heritage displays, we delivered youth workshops in graffiti, DJing, rapping, and heritage as part of @MCRActive @ManCityCouncil Holiday Activity Fund, welcomed (delivered by our young @WeLoveMCRfund supported RootedinRhyme course graduates /now facilitators) S.E.N. schools groups including @WestKirbySchool and youth groups including @mahdloyouthzone for pioneer led tours, delivered a week long live broadcast alongside @gobeyondmcr Conference (which led to meeting some incredible people and industry contacts). We've provided young creatives and super dope conscious rappers like LayFullStop with backdrops for music videos, and provided Manchester Fashion Institute students with a very special tour hosted by MHHA fashion curator and Streetwear pioneer Chris Hamer.
As well as making new friends, and receiving brilliant comments and feedback, as the doors closed at the end of October and drawing Black History Month to an end, North West Media's Manchester Hip Hop Archive, was invited to be popping-up this Saturday Nov 18th @factoryintl ‘s ‘The Welcome' as part of the Street Culture Takeover, programmed by creative producer Ste Wing and thanks to Robert Croll and the diasporic equality and equity group!
We now look forward to continuing Hip Hip Ed through schools with partners One Education Ltd and our own informal education progs @YouthMusic 🤗 💪 ❤️
