Consider the diagrams of the human body in a science textbook, infographics that guide readers through geological processes, or renderings of extinct creatures that are so detailed that they almost spring back to life. Scientific illustrators must strike a careful balance to provide the right amount of information to a public that may have little knowledge of the concept or scientific area depicted. The scientific illustration program is housed in the Franklin College of Arts and Sciences’ Lamar Dodd School of Art. Go Dawgs! Keaton Coletti, a Ph.D. candidate in mechanical engineering at the University of Georgia, has been named a Truman Postdoctoral Fellow at Sandia National Laboratories. The Truman Postdoctoral Fellowship is a highly competitive, three-year appointment designed to attract exceptional early career scientists and engineers to pursue independent research that directly supports Sandia’s national security mission. “One of the biggest takeaways for me was seeing how deeply connected rural health care providers are to their communities. They’re truly valued—not just as professionals, but as neighbors and trusted members of the community. That kind of support system really stood out and experiencing it firsthand was more powerful than I ever expected.” Hosted by the UGA Archway Partnership, the Pre-Med Rural Georgia Hospital Tour, takes pre-med students across rural Georgia to learn what life would be like practicing medicine in a rural community.
