@buhleh__ Agreed, and essentially the middleman handling logistics. But they didn’t commission and publish. The author’s deal is with TMP.

@valavoosh There's a market for it, maybe? Checkpoint has already had the author twice to speak about the book

@ontie_ODM This is why it should have been a memoir. That would have probably led to a more meaningful engagement with the book because so many people live with a mother/father wound.

@valavoosh It's wild and unfounded. It becomes a hearsay so to speak because there is no scientific evidence to prove the claims. No evidencial backing whatsoever.

Mam' Zodwa moved mountains for me to see MaNgutyana. I'm glad to know she's finally sharing her story.

The proofs are in and the cover is done. My monograph, based on my PhD research on disabled rural Xhosa men, will be out in August as the 4th instalment in a masculinities series with Emerald Publishing.

In 1949, Ida became the founding president of the ANCWL which rebranded from the ANC Women's Section. Unlike the Section, the League was a far more radical iteration of the women's branch of the mother body. Under Mntwana the women propelled mass action in the era of the defiance campaign in urban and rural areas. This photograph depicts women marching in Durban and they're led by Dorothy Nyembe, Lilian Ngoyi and Florence Mkhize.

I don't think we can talk about the Women's march nor the role of women in the 50s without the mention of Ida Mntwana, who tends to be overlooked. Her date of birth is cited as 5 August 1903. She cut her death in worker movements and the African National Congress Youth League shortly after the organisation extended membership to women. So she was in her 40s years old when she joined the organisation.

9 August 2026 will mark the 70th anniversary of the women's march. The organisation that galvanised 20000 women to march on the union buildings (frame 2), the Federation of South African Women, was launched on this day in 1954 as seen in the first image. Both 📸: Eli Weinberg

@khanyisile The EB website places them under "Published by" (although they could have just destroyed the copies), so I think its worth correcting.

Those topics are subjective and will rely on individual experiences because we can call in and speak of our experiences of sitting in the back seat of my man's car while his mom rides in the front or whatever. A book isn't. This is was irresponsible. If he'd written a memoir titled, "My mother hates me," then that would be a different story.
