@dvassallo Had a friend argue to me once - not zero sum. If you're talking about $0 vs $700k at age 18, absolutely go public+$. But if you're talking about eventual inheritance/seed $, then yeah...I'd rather give my 25yo $4M+private school (education+connections) than $5M+LA public school.

Good private schools here cost $700K per child from kindergarten through high school. With 3 kids, that’s $2.1M. For a diploma. Just give each kid $700K at 18. That’s a house, a business, or a fully funded retirement account. No chance these schools beat that kind of head start.
Nick Maggiulli@dollarsanddata

Private schools are the most expensive placebo in America. Nowhere else will you pay $250k+ for something that has so little impact on school achievement. My latest on why private school isn't worth the cost: ofdollarsanddata.com/why-private-sc…

Is there a place where I can stream the TNT version of movies? Because I want to be able to watch Die Hard or The Rock with my family without my 7 year old daughter finding out what winners do to prom queens.

I’ve cracked wordle If you play STAIR, LEMON, then PUDGY you optimize your letter usage among 15 of the most common letters with no repeats After that, you always have enough information to correctly guess the word on the fourth turn

Brandon is floored that he's getting pushback to his take that Saturday is the biggest game of Mizzou fans' lives. Mizzou fans, weigh in - Am I wrong in feeling that Auburn vs. 2013 qualifies? National semifinal, you trailed by 3 entering Q4... That was my logic. Thoughts?

@kirawontmiss Here are three options for restaurants 1. Service is good, you tip whatever you want. 0% to 100%. Customer’s in control! 2. We add a service charge and distribute how we like! 3. We increase the prices by 20%, pay whatever we need, to keep the staff. Which is better for you?

@Ami61495883 She's Telugu Brahmin. I'd have bet on Bay Area. Dad possibly migrated during the dot com bubble. Probably worked at Infosys before that, where they segregate the meat-eaters to a corner of the cafeteria and sieve in other Andhra Brahmins in the hiring process.

I like to play this game. Every time an Indian origin kid in the West signals their progressive virtue in woke-speak -- from 'yoga is cultural appropriation' to anti-colonialism takes -- I google their last name for caste origins. 10 times out of 10 it is South Indian Brahmin. Coz the best people to lecture the world on oppression are those who benefited from 3000 years of upper caste hegemony that would make Southern White slave-owners from the Jim Crow South look humane.

@Hitchslap1 @veebeeaisdee I don’t agree. I took the SAT’s in 7th grade as an 11 year old and got a 1250 - but 450 in verbal. Terrible vocabulary (and no prep). 4 years later I only cared about matching my math score, but managed 300 pts higher in verbal. My reasoning didn’t change much in those 4 years.

@veebeeaisdee Yes good point. The analogies are mostly testing reasoning rather than vocabulary.

In 2005, verbal analogies were removed from the SAT. This was partly due to higher failure rates among minority students. Do you think verbal analogies are culturally biased?

@realEstateTrent For 500sf… your friend is getting ripped off. As a sanity check, I ran it by Grok. 500sf should not cost $1mm. It should only be $350-$500 per sf. $250k max. Are they building out of gold and platinum? Or is it 5,000sf instead of 500sf?

My friend wants to add about 500 square feet to his house, and it’ll cost him around $1M. Ordinarily, that would make ZERO sense - he’d just sell and buy a bigger house. But crazy as it sounds, in today’s upside-down world where mortgages have basically become a form of national rent control, it actually does make sense. He bought the house a few years ago for $2.5M, locked in a 2.75% rate, and pays $7,653 a month. If he tried to buy a slightly bigger house in the same neighborhood today, it would cost $4M - and with 25% down, the mortgage would be nearly $20,000 a month. So… irrational $1M remodel it is!

@alex_borkin When you’re in your 50s/60s, (good) private insurance can be 5x that (mostly for you plus spouse). When I was 28 my private employer was happy to pay my insurance in full (~$300/month). At 30 it went up 50%, then doubled again by 40. Medicare will offset eventually.

For my EU followers (if any): Is free healthcare really that much of a flex? I pay ~$1K/mo for a family of 4. But salaries for similar roles (e.g., software engineer): 🇺🇸 $200K 🇪🇺 $80K Seems like even with private insurance, the math favors the U.S. What am I missing?

@Austen My one thing is - is it actually wasteful? Feels like high ROI investment to go build infrastructure in Africa and get goodwill plus potentially business deals on mineral rights (what china's been doing for 20 years)...no?
